Re: The Quintar Project: Popularizing an All Fifths Tuning
Bassist Rex Maddox was a big proponent of tuning in fifths and his instrument might have been 43" scale to boot. Yes and also jazz bassist Red Mitchell changed to fifths during his career. There's also a classical bassist who is promoting an all fifths tuning tuning. Thanks Hans, cool document...

Re: The Quintar Project: Popularizing an All Fifths Tuning
Stretching was a bit of a hassle in the beginning. After watching some cello players play ( a cello has the same stringlength as my baritone guitar), the solution was to make a jump more then a stretch (moving your whole hand instead of only your pinkie). I copy your sight-reading experience: most o...

The Quintar Project: Popularizing an All Fifths Tuning
As some may know, I've switched to an all fifths tuning a while ago. Right now I'm relearning how to play guitar and thought that it may benefit others when I share the stuff that I need to know myself also. Therefore I'm making a Scale, Arpeggio and Chordbook for an all fifths tuning. It's work in ...

Re: Popsicle pickup for acoustic instrument
There's a very useful (but lengthy thread) on the MEF ) about this subject (where I got this idea). An advantage of a transformer with a build in primary loop (like the CSE187L) is that you can connect the ends of the thick wire loop directly to the primary loop, that would remove the kind of crude ...

Re: Popsicle pickup for acoustic instrument
I've made a sideview shot. Popsicle sideview.jpg I don't have any "building in progress" pictures, but it is a pretty straight forward process. 1. Predrilling the holes for the screws (the hole of the top stick is bigger then the hole in the other stick). 2. Gluing the magnets between the ...

Popsicle pickup for acoustic instrument
I made a simple pickup to fit my modified baritone guitar (tuned it in fifths, and adjusted it accordingly). My wife made me promise that it would be a "non-destructive" pickup, so no drilling allowed. I came up with this: Popsicle Pickup.jpg Popsicle Pickup Zoomed.jpg I sandwiched two 25x...

Re: Stick Quintar: prototype 0
One of the other reasons I developed this script was that I had an idea to make a compound string spacing. With the fifths tuning I have a wide range and when playing in the bass region I like to get my fingers of my right hand in between the strings to get the right tone, so I need a wide spacing, ...

Re: Stick Quintar: prototype 0
That's a useful tool indeed David! I used it as a reference for the script. I use a different approach for calculating the nut width, which fretfind2d doesn't supplies. I use the following formula: Nutwidth = 2*fretboardoverhang + sum(stringgauges) + (number of strings-1)*sidetosidestringspacing. Be...

Re: Stick Quintar: prototype 0
I'm planning to make prototype 1 of the stick quintar (SQ). It will be similar to prototype 0, only with 12 strings. The four lowest string pairs will be in octaves (C, G, D and A) and highest to in unison (E and B). I've made a simple script for FreeCAD to draw the outline and strings of the SQ. Al...

Re: Stick Quintar: prototype 0
Thanks guys for your replies. Overview stick quintar 2.JPG Stick Quintar Headstock.JPG A few other reasons why I came to this design are that I'm always drawn to practical and simple (minimalistic?) designs. Further our home is crowded with (lovely!) people, so stacking piles of instruments is not a...
