Re: The scorper, a rosette channel cutter

Look carefully at the cross-sectional shape of his cutter. It's feathered for clearance on both sides.

Re: The scorper, a rosette channel cutter

Bryan, One way to deal with that would be to make the scorper with cutting edges on both ends. One would be as in the video. The other end would be modified by hollowing out the center of the edge with a file to form two spurs on the outer edges. The cut would be started with the modified end to sco...

The scorper, a rosette channel cutter

Hello, The shape of the scorper is the critical feature. Everything you need to see is in the video.

Re: Woodworking Workbench

I think you'll end up building more than one. And they'll probably mutate as needs dictate. Many of the features of a traditional cabinetmaker's bench may or may not be useful, but you won't go too far wrong. Lately I've been admiring Paul Sellers very practical advice about workbenches and handtool...

Re: One of those offbeat ideas - a d/c-powered pipe organ?

Hmm, the first question is to determine the pressure & maximum flow rate after determining how many ranks of pipes are desired. Maybe a simpler way would be to make a mechanical bleed valve, with the issue of keeping bleed off quiet.

One of those offbeat ideas - a dust-collector-powered pipe organ?

Every once in a while, a semi-crazy idea pops into my head. I was thinking about one of my high school teachers who had built a new house for himself - around a church pipe organ that he'd bought (Really!). So it occurred to me that it might be possible to build one using a dust collector blower for...

Re: Drum sander attachment for my outside sanding lathe

Bob, do you get an even thickness with your rig? If so, it's easier to build and set up than the one I built (in the library) which gives good results but takes time to set up and adjust (I like to do a woodturning too).

Re: Coolest or most useful tool that you have?

in some ways, a cool tool is my Rockwell Uniplane - it can surface just about any wood in any orientation, and down to very small pieces. Woodturners such as Max Krimmel (he's also a guitar builder) use them to surface and build up stock by gluing small pieces together. I have also seen a video wher...

I stopped using knitting needles when I poked one in the right ear, and then the point emerged from the left ear. My dignity was compromised.

Re: Acrylic Templates

Who needs high speed tools? A leisurely cut with a fine-toothed bandsaw and then a trimming with a sanding drum on a drill press cut the outline without a fuss. It would have been no more difficult if it had been 1/4" acrylic or polycarbonate. The template in the picture was made with ordinary ...

Re: Acrylic Templates

Here's one that I made. I had the plan copied (be sure to take a ruler along to measure the copy!). Then I applied 3M SprayMount (or 77?) to1/8" acrylic and laid the copy on it. After the adhesive was set, I cut away and removed everything but the outline & bracing pattern. I use spirits of...

Re: 1HP motor: any benefit to wiring 220 vs 110

I think Brian has explained it very well. That said, after moving a 1.5HP tool from one place to another, for convenience I rewired the motor from 120V to 240V (both circuits were short runs of 12ga wire. The tool seemed to start with a stronger 'zing', but it really made no difference in the perfor...

Hmm, weren't you the guy who was wondering if it would be possible to build without a shop? These machines do take up space. Where would you use it and store it?

Re: Broken router collet. Why?

It's fortunate that you weren't injured. This is the first time that I've heard of a collet breaking, but come to think of it, I've never tightened a collet without a bit in it. On router bits that I use frequently, I put a rubber O-ring on the shank at the proper insertion depth. It also acts as a ...

Re: Dust Collectors

The static is a nuisance but is not dangerous except in factory-size installations. Some plastics are more susceptible to static charge accumulation. Aside from that, dryer vent hose may not be the best choice for a duct because it's corrugated and often very thin-walled. Try using rigid Sch 30 sewe...

Re: Using a clothes steam iron for bending sides?

I don't have any pics or the unit anymore, but I re-engineered toaster oven (~1500W) as a heat source under a Fox style bender. The thermostat was of good quality, but after relocating the sensor under the bender it was necessary recalibrate the knob.

Re: Is this style dust collector a complete waste of space?

Generally, manufacturers' CFM specifications are notoriously misleading. For any given D/C unit, the true CFM will be determined by the characteristics of the duct system from a tool to the unit, including the diameters, lengths, number and tightness of turns, That said, often the downfall of most o...
