Re: Help with water based wood stain/dye

I seal the color with shellac and then do System 3 epoxy pore fill and then I use KTM SV over the epoxy. On non porous woods like Spruce and Maple, I shoot the SV over the shellac.

Re: KTM-9 and neck feel

I've used KTM 9 and found that some of my customer's body chemistry softened the finish to the point of them scraping it off. I now use a Waterlox oil finish on my neck sanded in the first couple of coats to seal the pores and 3 or 4 thin coats applied with a cloth and then 2 or 3 coats rubbed in wi...

Re: 1928 style Nick Lucas finished

Thanks, it was fun to build. :D :D As far as a plan is concerned I started with a template from David Wren and then picked up the GAL Plan #6 '20s Gibson L-0 Guitar which has an H bracing pattern. I wanted and used an X brace pattern from a photo of a 1928 or so L-1 top. I used a 24 1/4 inch scale l...

Re: 1928 style Nick Lucas finished

I use the stewmac dyes in alcohol and I spray the burst and the tints for the side and back. I mask the purfling and the rosette before I spray the dye and then spray a couple of coats of shellac before I fill with system 3 epoxy.

Re: 1928 style Nick Lucas finished

That scale length seems standard for 1927 and 1928. In 1929 it changed to 24 3/4. I used medium strings and it is very easy to play.

Re: Trouble with Grain Filler

I use the SB112 which is a laminating and coating resin. I am not sure if the epoxy glues are suitable for pore filling. Since I use small quantities I mix by weight rather than volume. SB112 uses a ratio of 100 resin to 44 hardener. I don't want to have any issues with the epoxy not hardening prope...

Re: Trouble with Grain Filler

If you are using a waterborne finish, epoxy makes a very good grain filler. I use system 3 and others have used z-poxy and west systems. I seal with shellac and then fill with epoxy usually two to three applications. Then follow your regular spraying or brushing schedule.

Re: Help with water based wood stain/dye

For the Stew Mac dyes I use 50 drops of color to 4 oz of alcohol. I usually spray the color with a small detail gun or an air brush. I like the alcohol because it dries quickly and allows me to spray a number of coats to reach the desired depth of color without waiting a half an hour for it to dry. ...

Re: Where to buy Ethanol for French polish-

Commercial Alcohols http://www.comalc.com/ will supply ethyl alcohol. They are in Brampton or Bramalea. It is sold in case lots only and you have to get a license from the LCBO and pay the taxes etc. I believe the minimum order is a case ( 12 - 500 ml amber glass bottles $113.00 plus $70.13 excise d...

Re: Trying to find a recommendation from over a year ago for wipe-on neck finish?

When I open the can of Waterlox, I decant it into smaller 4 oz containers. As I use it I crush the smaller cans to keep the level of finish near the top of the can and store it upside down.

My understanding is opposite that. Along the grain is heel to tail and across the grain is treble to bass.

Re: Permanent "Nashville Tuning" Bridge

I would fill the existing slot with matching wood. Rather than a straight saddle, you might consider compensating it for each string. It would be a good exercise. I use Stew Macs intonator, but you could use a small length of rod of a diameter equal to your saddle height, place one under each string...
