Re: Thoughts on composite fretboard material

Interesting, it seems like most people are having a positive reaction to the idea. I was initially thinking it might be a tough sell, and haven't done any cost analysis of it yet, but based on the responses here I think it would be worth going forward with a deeper look.

Re: Thoughts on composite fretboard material

I've did a google search and found this fretless Gibson . Instrument builder and player Edward Powell also uses it. I think it is mainly used for fretless fingerboards. For what kind of neck are you planning to use it for? I actually wasn't planning on using it but my Sister said she wanted to expl...

Thoughts on composite fretboard material

I have a relative who is a sales rep for a composite counter material, it's essentially the same as Richlite or Paperstone, and she was asking me what I thought about using it as a fretboard material. Most of the colors are probably not something I'd be interested in but two, black and white are int...

Re: Burst on top, solid on back: simple solid-body finish?

Jason if you want, I can show you how to spray a burst and you could come out to my shop and use the booth to spray it. I've got an airbrush I can set up for you, and I could mix some black lacquer or toner for you if you provide the lacquer. You'd have to make arrangements to store it while it's cu...

Re: downtuned tuning problems with a six string electric

If the guys in Periphery are playing 6-strings, I'm pretty sure they're almost always in that drop-drop-C. Misha Mansoor's Jackson signature and Jake Bowen's Ibanez signature guitars, and Mark Holcomb plays a John Petrucci Music Man JP6, are standard 25-1/2" scales. They do use 7- and 8- strin...

Re: downtuned tuning problems with a six string electric

I believe that the string thickness theory that Hans mentions above, is the correct way to go. I recently set a 25 inch scale guitar up to play detuned to C. I ended up with a set of 12 - 56 before it played decently. An even heavier set would have cleaned it up considerably, but that didn't seem t...

Re: downtuned tuning problems with a six string electric

I don't know about "Doom" metal, but the band Periphery does regularly tune down a whole step and then drops the low D to C:. ie, drop-D tuned down. They play Ibanez, Music Man, Mayones, and Jackson guitars, which would be standard 25-1/2" scales. I found a quote saying they use D'Ad...

Re: downtuned tuning problems with a six string electric

If you don't mind burning through a couple sets of strings, start with 13s, try em out, and if that's too much metal under his fingers, back off to 12s. About 10 years back, I put 13s on a cheap Korean Strat clone and tried tuning it like a baritone, a 4th down, and the tension felt ok, but intonat...

Re: downtuned tuning problems with a six string electric

it's worth a shot Jason, couldn't hurt at this point. I'm wondering too what my responsibility is towards this situation since it really seems like what he wanted falls well outside the standard operating range of the instrument. It's my fault for not knowing or understanding all of these pitfalls u...

Re: downtuned tuning problems with a six string electric

John, Have you tried yanking on the strings to detune them a few times to see if that helps? Do you have no more than a 1/2 turn around the capstans? DR makes a DDT13 set for just this purpose so those ought to be your next experiment. I'd be tempted to try a regular bone nut at some point. You may...

downtuned tuning problems with a six string electric

Hi folks, in a bit of a pickle over my latest guitar. I built it for a friend who wanted to downtune it to C standard tuning, that is C F B E G# C, and it's not staying in tune. I used a heavier gauge string set but I may have to go heavier. Right now I'm using a DR set that goes 11, 15, 19, 32, 42,...

Re: second electric done

Excellent work, John! That green finish and orange sapele compliment each other in a way that is pleasing to my eye. And dang, those are some hot pickups! This interests me, as I'm sure you know. I look forward to a closer look, and listen, tomorrow. Thanks Jason, it'll be cool to see how you like ...

Re: second electric done

Thanks Henrique, I will post some closer pics of the knobs later tonight. Yes the screws are shorter than what I've used in the past, they are a fine thread metric screw which I threaded directly into the neck, after which I soaked the holes with CA glue. I think they were about 1.25 long with about...

second electric done

Hi folks, here are some specs and pics of my second electric, this has been a long time coming but I'm pretty happy with how she turned out. Like my first it's a double cut, Les Paul type, although this one has a relief carve at the higher frets a la a PRS Santana. The body is Sapele with a quilted ...

Re: sea glassing fret ends

IIRC, Warmoth trimmed fret ends using a router. Could be old information, not sure what they do now, but I believe I read this in AL. I've never tried it since I don't build anywhere near that rate. Am I the only person here who looks at that video and cringes at the basic shop safety stuff? Or am ...
