polishing polyurethane to a satin finish
I need some advice on polishing out a polyurethane finish to a semi-gloss/satin finish. I'm not going for a high gloss mirrored finish, I want more of a low gloss satin finish but not sure how to go about it. I usually do oil finishes, this will be my first go with poly. For my oil finishes to achie...

Really cool guitar! I've eyed those stetsbar tremolos several times but haven't tried one yet. How do you like it?

Pickup placement on short scale (28.6") bass
I'm getting ready to route the pickup cavity on my short scale bass project. It's a 28.6" scale length and I'll be using only one musicman style pickup. Knowing how the shorter scale length will result in lower string tension and a more fatter/boomy (for lack of better trems) sound I am wonderi...

Re: Patching Mahogany
I've always used sawdust and titebond to make wood putty and haven't had any problems. It will dry a bit darker than the surrounding wood but if it's in an out of the way place it won't be too noticable.

My latest build, I call this one The Glacier
Here is my lastest project completed. This one is modeled of the ibanez iceman/fireman. As you can see it's basically the fireman body flipped back around like the iceman. I decided to call this one the Glacier. This build had several firsts for me. First time I bothered carving a belly contour, fir...

Very nice work, I like the single pickup minimalistic look. What type of pickup did you use? It looks like one of those GFS loudmouths

Re: Anyone have experience with Krylon Finishes?
I'm coming in a little late on this but I want to share my experience. I painted 2 guitars using krylonprimer paint and clear coat. I did not spray it on too thick or anything and let it cure for about 3 months or so. When I first leveled and buffed it out the finish looked great. I was really pleas...

Re: Question on tru-oil and dyed flame maple with faux binding
So I went ahead and dove in using Rodger's advice. My fear was the color soaking into the rag while applying oil and spreading where I didn't want it to go. Great note, that didn't happen. What did appear to happen is the oil took some color futher down into the open grain of the "tiger stripes...

Re: Question on tru-oil and dyed flame maple with faux binding
The india ink i used came from hobby lobby, it's Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay brand. It's in little jars for calligraphy pens. Here's a link to it. http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/bombay-teal-india-ink-107565/ I diluted it with some alcohol so it it would spread more evenly without diluting the color.

Question on tru-oil and dyed flame maple with faux binding
The body I'm currently working on has a walnut back with flame maple top. The top is dyed with india ink and also has the prs style faux binding. I'm at the stage of my project where I'll be putting on the finish. I'll be using tru oil. Normally with a natural, undyed body I just wipe on a few coats...

Home made wind chimes
I had some spare time so I decided to make a wind chime while I was waiting for parts for my guitar project to come in the mail. Technically it's not an instrument but I thought I'd post it anyway. Everything is made from scraps & leftovers. The support, knocker and sail are all made out of scra...

Re: 1 humbucker wiring possibility
If that setup will only give me parallel wiring I'm not going to go that way. The idea actually came to me when looking at wiring for a p/j bass. I still have a good bit of time before I get to the wiring. Now I'm leaning toward doing a mini switch for seaies/parallel wiring, or maybe trying one of ...

1 humbucker wiring possibility
I'm doing a 1 humbucker guitar and was kicking around this idea. Would it be possible to treat each coil like a seperate pickup and have 2 volume controls (1 for each coil)? I'm attaching a quick diagram of what I'm thinking and how it may be wired, would this work?

Re: Thinking of starting another project
I will agree with everyone here, better pickups and quality pots will be a nice upgrade and definately will be worth the time and money. I did the same thing your considering with a cheapy flying V I had picked up a while back. The body was solid wood but was no where near top quality and the pups &...

It's cool to see we're testing out a reviews section. Since no one's posted there yet I figured I'd kick it off with a quick review of a active distortion circuit I picked up a while ago.

Re: Making a parts and hardware review section
Reviews/opinions are going to be a bit subjective by nature, that's not a problem as long as you give a reasoning behind it. The ones that get me are when people say 'it's a piece of junk' with no reason why. Is it junk because you don't like it or did it fall apart in your hands? I'm pretty sure th...

Making a parts and hardware review section
As usual, searching the internet for reviews and in general for that matter gives all kind of info but 90% of the time it's nothing useful. A great example of this that I'm running across is trying to find reviews of pickups. I used to use the harmony central reviews of pickups for this but they've ...
