Re: "Relic-ing" a Finish: Opinion Only

The only relic finish I don’t mind looking at is the old barn wood look.
Seeing a bright shiny finish with sanded spots here and there is dumb.

Ebony veneer seems like a logical choice?

Re: Broken router collet. Why?

Make sure the bit is not bottomed-out before tightening.
Stick it in and pull it out 1/8” or so.
I learnd this when I had a bit fly out.

I would not want to be without my nut slotting files.
I tried all kinds of things with poor results.

Re: In search of inlay technique

I recently completed my first inlay with gold MOP. Here's what I did for reference: My shell blanks were 1-inch square. I used a jeweler's fret saw. I was suprised at how fast it cut. I ran into a problem of holding the shell while sawing. I cut paper pattern pieces and glued them to the shell with ...

Re: Veneer question

I've had no problems applying veneer to one side of a guitar body.
I reckon the thickness of the body would be difficult to potato-chip.
I use veneer glue. Much less likely to cause expansion and contraction problems when wet and when dry. I had these problems using Titebond.

Re: Finished a RR V-style build

It's got skull knobs, so it will only play rock.
I usually use skull knobs and tell the receipient that if he plays country music on it, it will ruin it.
This design is based on a Randy Rhodes V. I reckon that puts it in the 1990's?
Thanks for the comments guys!

Finished a RR V-style build

Maple, Padauk, Ebony.
Neck-through design. Hollow wings, total weight is 6 lbs.
25.3" scale, 14" radius.
Emg 81, Schaller bridge, Grover tuners.
The action is very good.
Clumsy trying to play the thing sitting down.

Thanks,
I'm in central Texas.
We are under flood conditions now.
My family at the coast still has a house to return to.
My daughter is stuck on a cruise ship.
At least she got a free day in New Orleans. Waiting for Galeston port to open.
