Re: Starter Chisel Set?

I will throw my 2-cents in: Just like handplanes: you need to no only learn to use them, but how to dial them in and make/keep them sharp! I have a good sharpening system and can make even a modern Buck Bros. Plane or Chisel perform exceptionally well. You don't have to have Lie-Nielson tools (As mu...

Re: Customers in your shop

This issue reminds me of a sign of Repair Shop I once was at:

It read something along the lines:

Hourly Rate: ($)
If you stay and watch while I work ($ Tripple the above amount)

I think you need on like that!

Re: Coil Splitting with 5-Way

OK, I have a Little 59 in one of my Strats and I used to have a JB jr. Both pickups can sound OK as a single-coil, but if it were my guitar: I would either use the pairs of coils, like I mentioned above or, maybe consider putting the humbuckers in parallel vs. as 1 coil only in the #1 & #5 posit...

Re: Coil Splitting with 5-Way

It will depend on what sound you like and what the humbuckers sound like. In some cases it works and some pickups don't sound good when you try to get any other sound than the intended humbucker. Which ones did you buy? Another option could be to make the #2 & #4 positions to be inner & oute...

Re: Joining Birdseye Maple Plates.

I normally use a much higher angle when working on Maple with a figure or birdseyes. I also have a scraper-plane that works well.

If you can scrape it, then the sanding beam will be you're only other option.

Scuff sanding in between coats will remove those. I use 3M 800grit Free-Cut Gold papers for that.

Re: Black aniline dye on fretboard

I've never tried it. I use the leather dye since it was what all the major manufactures use so I figured not to mess with a good thing. Maybe someone else can chime in?

Re: What are the most common fretboard radii

My top 4 would be 9 1/2, 12, 16, & 7 1/4 in that order. I have all the others, but they get little use. There's also the choice to skip the radius blocks and just use a beam with sandpaper. I use that even more often than the blocks

Re: How to separate body wings from a through-body neck?

I'd consider completely filling in the neck pickup-cavity and skip the neck-pickup all together to retain as much structural-integrity as possible.

Re: Drilling countersink holes for StewMac ferrules?

StewMac does sell a bit, but it's really expensive. I bought a whole set of Foresner Bits for that price from Woodcraft. My bits are certainly not as nice, but they get the job done. I have installed these ferrules in several guitars and can say that you don't need their bit. Here's a link to the St...

Re: Beginners wiring query

Yes, you'll be able to get those tones with that switch. The closest way to achieve what I think you mean for the #4 sound is to take the bottom coil of the bridge and the top coil of the neck together in parallel.

Re: Stew Mac Repair Vise?

Buyer Beware! I took me 3 vices and countless hours until I could piece together a decent one from the parts of all 3! StewMac paid all the shipping, but it was a lot more work than expected for $140! You can get a similar vice for much less elsewhere. I would have done the same if I knew what I was...

Re: Purfling tool setup (?)

Replacement blades are $12 and easily changed. I don't see the harm in grinding-down the existing ones to make it work. Just buy the backup set now in case they ever discontinued the tool. Then you'd be sorry for modifying the blades!

Re: Recycling Old Amp Parts

If you want to use this amp for parts you might have to fix it or identify the bad-spot first. You don't want to borrow anything from that amp to make something new, only to find you transplanted the faulty-parts :). Since you're new to this, you'd have enough of a challenge building something else ...

As Kary Mentioned, Some DMM's come with them. I have a Fluke 189 that came with one.

You can also buy pieces, kits, etc. McMaster Carr has some.

Re: Let's design and build a better hygrometer, once and for all..!

The thermocouple uses a 2-conductor cord. At the end that is being used to take the reading you have the insulation stripped for both conductors and the 2 conductors are joined to a single-element (soldered?). The exposed-part of the wires is where the reading is taken from. I believe the principle ...

I'm also wondering if there's a change the fog on the glass might be enough to allow for a good laser reading? Once the glass is clear, you're past the dew-point, right? Maybe you'll be able to get valid readings until you don't need them? As another for another method to read the temp: Maybe CA-Glu...

Yeah, I made a P1 ex and now I've converted it to an SEL. It's my main amp I gig with!
