Re: New Pau Ferro Guitar

Looks great! I've never tried Pau Ferro, great looking top.

I meant to post this a while back, but got frustrated that I hadn't been able to remember my login password.....

Re: Carved Olive Top Guitar Finally Done

Thanks! Sorry, I realized I didn't even attach a photo of the back. Will do that later on. Yeah I bet olive would be a good fingerboard! The weight of this piece seemed similar to maple. I loved the way it worked, it's really hard, but somehow sands very easily and works well. Now I want to try it f...

Carved Olive Top Guitar Finally Done

I never want to move again when I'm right at the final sanding stage! Delayed about 1 year, haha. It's finally done. I added one modification - I made a custom ebony bar that runs across the front two screw holes on the trem assembly. It makes it function more like a Bigsby, and increases the string...

Thanks. Olive is really nice to work with as well.

Good old Tru-Oil! My favorite.

Re: Ideas for things to do with extra mini-switches?

I may have posted some progress shots a while back, when I thought I was about to finish it (wrong!). Here's the guitar. It's a little further along now.

Re: Ideas for things to do with extra mini-switches?

Oh, and these are all holes previously drilled into the top of the guitar. No pickguard this time. The clutter isn't too bad, I just didn't find individual coil splits useful.

Re: Ideas for things to do with extra mini-switches?

Ooh, I like the kill switch idea. Maybe that and a phase switch for the middle.

I think I'm going to stick with the 5-way since that's what I bought and it's a nice one.

I also like the pyrotechnics idea, haha.

Ideas for things to do with extra mini-switches?

My latest build has been languishing for months after a recent move, but I'm finally trying to get it finished up. It's kind of a kitchen sink build, with all the bells and whistles. Triple mini-hums, a vibrato, 5-way switch, and for some reason I decided to put 3 mini-switches in, to split each hum...

Re: Thinking of building an LP-style with a bolt-on neck

I don't see any reason not to do it. My favorite part about bolt on necks is that it's easier to apply a finish to a separate neck and body, especially if you plan on using two different finishes. For example using an oil finish on the neck for the feel, but gloss lacquer on the body.

Re: Tremolo Preference

I would consider the Jazzmaster style tremolo (vibrato) another category, wouldn't you? I don't have a favorite style tremolo, but I do like the JM style quite a bit once it is set up correctly, and with a much steeper angle over the bridge than a JM has (my preference is a good roller bridge). It's...

Re: Maple SG

Great job, and what a generous gift!

Is that a lacquer finish? I want to gift a guitar to a family member someday, but I don't know if I could ever bring myself to spray lacquer without getting paid!

Re: Finally starting a new project: Olive topped offset-SG-something shaped guitar

Thanks!

I haven't played too much with the finish yet, but it does seem like it will darken a moderate amount. It seems like an easy wood to polish to a nice sheen, so I'm expecting the tru-oil to go on nicely.

Haha thanks! Yeah often models don't quite look right unless you take the time to really contour things right, which I don't have the patience for.

Re: Finally starting a new project: Olive topped offset-SG-something shaped guitar

Latest progress: It's almost done, it just needs final sanding and the good 'ol Tru-Oil finish. But I've learned I like to set the whole thing up, do electronics, and play it before doing that, for a couple reasons. First, I often end up doing something dumb and nicking the finish on the back when i...

Re: whammy bridge under 3/8" for carved top?

I definitely think the mosrite bridge with Bigsby will work just fine even without a buzz stop. Just a warning, I got the mosrite style trem on ebay, that came with the mosrite style bridge, and I like the trem, but I'm not happy with the bridge. A couple of the rollers buzz when playing that string...

Re: whammy bridge under 3/8" for carved top?

The whizzo buzz stop is what I was trying to think of too. It's meant for a jazzmaster trem, but you could mount it in front of something like the Mosrite trem too to lower the string height. I'm actually considering it just to get more break angle, but not sure how dumb it would look.

Re: whammy bridge under 3/8" for carved top?

That's a tough one. A Jazzmaster trem might be the lowest, but of course you'd have to route a big hole for that. I recently got a Mosrite style trem (search ebay if you want to see what it looks like) to try out on my latest guitar, but it's string height is even higher than a bigsby, and I have to...

Re: Finally starting a new project: Olive topped offset-SG-something shaped guitar

Updates! Neck is mostly inlayed and carved. Body is ready for final carving and sanding. I decided to use offcuts from the olive wood for the inlays as well as headstock overlay since it's such a cool piece of wood. Finding a headstock shape that would fit in the offcut was challenging, but I think ...
