Re: Amy Hopkins

Thanks for the heads up Mike. I'm thankful for her successful outcome. I see Clint and Alica Searcy are heading up this fund raiser; sort of restores your faith in mankind. I hope everyone here on the forum will step up and do all they can.

AutoCad help, Converting file formats

I went to my local blueprint shop yesterday with a plan I had developed in AutoCad to have it plotted. The shop could not read the .dwg file but the youngster at the counter was able to convert it to a .pdf file which he was then able to plot. I understand the preferred format would be a .dwf file. ...

Re: Weakness on the high E, 12th-15th fret?

A couple of thoughts come to mind. You could build with an elevated fretboard extension or cut the top out around the head block something like Taylor guitars are built. I like the archtop approach but never got around to building one that way.

Move!

The plastic makes it difficult. I would suggest a torch or paint stripper but I suspect you want to keep it recognizable as a tub. You must attempt to be the scum (not difficult for me) and figure out what might work. ;)

Re: Weakness on the high E, 12th-15th fret?

Craig, I know exactly what you are talking about which makes me think it is inherent in this type of guitar. To me, it sounds like someone has slipped cardboard under the bridge maybe. It can occur in different places and usually will be over 2-4 frets and up the neck a bit. Like you, I sense that t...

Re: What are your prefered strings for a Selmer guitar?

I prefer the the lighter gauge strings in every situation I have tried them. As to what string to choose; I think it depends on what sound you want. If you have ever tried them, I think we can probably all agree that bronze strings are not a great choice; they are too bright and make me want to pour...

Re: Weakness on the high E, 12th-15th fret?

So Craig, were you able to make any improvement? I got to playing around with another Mac that I don't play much and am trying to chase out a few bugs in it. I agree with Michael; there is nothing like playing a newer instrument to improve it. That being said, I think most of the weakness is from th...

Re: Weakness on the high E, 12th-15th fret?

Lets go back to the bridge again. Try less than 1/2 the depth of the string buried in a slot, especially on the unwound strings. Also, how wide is the bridge where the string passes over? I thinned mine to about 1/16" and then brought it up to a blunt point. My objective is to minimize the string to...

Re: Weakness on the high E, 12th-15th fret?

I don't think you want a slot at the bridge for the strings to pass through but just enough of a "nick" to keep them in place. I had a similar problem after changing strings recently (don't remember what string or frets). I do remember fooling around with the saddle slot fixed it.

Re: An unusual string buzz

I had the same trouble in exactly the same place (B -7) on my Mac which is also sans truss rod. It has diminished over the years but every time I augment (change) the strings it comes back a little. If I remember correctly, I identified which fret was buzzing (2nd?) and cut that fret down under the ...

Allen, This one has a dark and light line of edge banding around the soundhole. I agree, I,m not a fan of large rosettes. Here are some pics of the details.

Re: Doing the "crease" for a Selmer-Maccaferri model.

Some observations and a general ramble here to try and tie up my post on this. First, in my comments above on building a the 15" guitar, I forgot to mention that I also wanted to have 14 frets clear of the body so what I ended up with was a 14 fret neck on a Mac braced body. To better clarify what I...

Re: Doing the "crease" for a Selmer-Maccaferri model.

Indeed, Bill R was a great help and offered much encouragement as I built my first Mac several years ago. Like you, Allen, I wanted something a bit different than a copy. My aim was to use the "standard" 25.5" scale, that I am used to playing, without radically altering the bridge location of the or...

Re: ala Castelluccia

I'm familiar with the DR tailpieces and agree they are appropriate for Selmer/ Mac copies but, to me, not really appropriate for non-Selmers. Kind of like building a Gibson L-5 and putting a Gretsch tailpiece on it but, as I said before, there aren't any other choices so all is forgiven. <g> The oth...
