Re: about using an eggbeater drill
I think I have pretty much always had one like Beate's. It probably got more use before I finally succumbed to buying a battery operated drill/electric screwdriver but it is regularly used nonetheless. I can't really imaging being without one. I would quite like to have a brace (as in brace and bit)...

Re: Back radius gone in one direction
My immediate feeling is that you have fallen foul of a humidity drop. I am guessing that NH is cold right now and into the winter heating season. If so, humidity may have dropped quite a bit since the back braces were prepared - assuming you did them in advance. I reckon new back braces and careful ...

Re: 6 course renaissance lute
The rosette looks like the same pattern I used on my 11 course lute. Back then it took me a full 2 days to do it. I would not have the patience any more.
Nice work.

Re: Need some advice on fingerstyle guitars
One other point to remember is that most guitars sound different to the player and the listener. A professional might well choose one guitar for amusement at home and something quite different for playing to an audience. Amplification/pick-ups change the story completely again.

Re: Searching for a good respirator
I have two different things I use. One is a plain industrial 2 cartridge rubber type respirator. I have p3 cartridges in it at the moment. I find it quite effective and much more comfortable than I would have expected despite wearing a beard. My glasses fit OK with it too and don't fog up much as th...

Re: Bandsaw issue.
I think I have it figured out. :-) When I installed the new blade I cur a few things free hand and all was ok. I didn't use the fence/guide. This time I wanted some straight cuts so I used the fence. Thew blade is a bit smaller than the old blade so what I didn't do when I put the new blade in was c...

Re: Bandsaw issue.
Thanks guys. The blade is almost new. I doubt if I have run it more than 30 mins in total. The curve is horizontal - as if I was trying to cut a curve such as the waist of a guitar. Somehow the blade starts to point inwards to the guide at the beginning of t he cut and as I finish it up it points ba...

Bandsaw issue.
I have a small bandsaw and am having a new problem with it. I have next to no experience with bandsaws. The problem is most likely self-inflicted. It was not used for a good few months and I readjusted the blade tension (if is a simple model with no tension indicators of any kind) during which proce...

Re: New Rosewood Regulations
I just saw this on the Delcamp forum. Some good news for guitar makers and owners. https://www.classicalguitardelcamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=117570&start=45#p1345498 Summary: An update to the rules about Rosewood is being proposed which exempts finished musical instruments from the ban. Re: Cheap black guitars
I wonder could it be something as simple as back absorbing heat causing some problem?
At the lower end of the market it might be that all the "black guitars" are from the same line despite the brand names - all with the same flaw.

Re: Buffing around the bridge
On my most recent classical (20 something ) I had strings on before I carved the neck! Getting a nice (french polish) finish in around the bridge is certainly one of my weaknesses as I too want to hear the guitar as soon as possible and also might want to sand a bit off the top if I am not happy Onl...

Re: bandsaw blade question
Thanks Bob, Clay. Not sure what the "perspex" I have is. I'll check the description. I will look into a skip blade the next time. There is one available form the supplier but I was not clear if it was useful or not. Another Q. Any uses you can think of for a broken (3/8" blade)? I suspect it is just...

Re: bandsaw blade question
Thanks David. I will give it a shot in the next couple of days. The supplier's answer was essentially that they have only ever tested my bandsaw for wood so they would not recommend anything for plastics. When I asked if they had suitable saw for plastic - the same answer. I can understand the cya a...

Re: Instructions for using a chisel
I met a guy in the tonewood business on monday who had part of the tip of his left index finger missing thanks to a bandsaw. He has some nice guitars but can't really play them any more.
Another reminder.

Re: bandsaw blade question
Rather than start a new thread I am adding a question here. What tpi would be appropriate for cutting perspex/acrylic for making templates? I assume a finer spacing would be better. As the original 3/8" x 6tpi was back ordered, I went for a 3/8" x 10tpi and a 1/2" x 4tpi. I reckon the 10tpi for pers...

Have you ever built an experimental batch of guitars with slight differences?
I know that, at least, Alan Carruth has done experiments at various times as he has mentioned them here and commented on the difficultly of building "identical" instruments. So far I have built guitars built on 4 different well known classical guitar plans. I have been toying with the idea of build ...

Re: Sound system in workshop?
I'm in trouble. Luckily I call myself a hobby builder and not a luthier. I can't stand having any additional "noise" when I am working. No radio, no mp3/streaming/CD/DVD.Matthew Lau wrote:This sounds sorta funny, but I've found pretty much every good luthier that I know has music on the background. ....

bandsaw blade question
I have a small "hobby" type bandsaw. The blade is 1790mm - 70.5 inches. The blade delivered with it was 3/8" x 6tpi. The blade has broken so I need to replace it. (I reckon if would be easy to fix but I don't have the means and don't know anyone local who does it). I am in a relatively isolated area...

Re: Alaskan Yellow Cedar for Flamenco Back And Sides.
I've done two guitars with yellow cedar (Cupressus nootkatensis). Source was probably Canada rather than Alaska. I don't generally soak any wood just damp it a bit with a sponge as I go along. Yellow cedar bends quite easily. The resins, at least on the stuff I have, smell even stronger that europea...
