Before you apply the tinted finish, first seal with clear. If you are going to use tinted lacquer, I would seal with vinyl sealer or shellac. I used to use what was called Naval Jelly on things that had durable surfaces. Not sure if there's a version for wood, or even if they still sell that stuff. It would get down through all layers of paint in minutes, and be scraped off with a putty knife.

Yeah, all the people who copied those Gibby adjustables didn't realize it was a poorly designed concept....I had, back in the day, inlaid the same wood and cut a traditional saddle slot. Saw probably 8 or 9 come through the shop after word got around.
