Re: AutoCad help, Converting file formats

Although I haven't used it personally, Autodesk's (the maker of Autocad) Design Review is free, and can allegedly plot dwfs directly.

Re: where to buy these items

I've bought several items from smallparts.com in the past. Just checked their url, and it looks as if they've been bought by Amazon . Although they have rectangular and round CF rod stock, it appears their max length is 12". [Edit] Hmm, Dragonplate has all sorts of interesting looking goodies...

So do you set it up nice and snug against the sandpaper, sand away, and then snug it up again until the deed is done? Very slick.

Re: Building a solid body electric guitar from scratch.

Hello Michael. I'd second Greg's book recommendation. Read it cover to cover, and then read it again. I built my first back in the 80's (with about the same set of goals as you've listed) with Hiscock's book open on the workbench the whole time. As for scale length, neck profile, etc, I'd suggest th...

Re: Demand for custom multi scale bridges?

Shooting from the hip here: what if the two bumps/sides of your bridge above were able to pivot (and then be locked down) around the post holes to acommodate different angles during construction? Some sort of side to side adjustment would also be necessary to deal with the varying "width" of the sad...

Re: Rain drums - drums played by the rain.

Following up on the funnel and murderous neighbor ideas: perhaps your drum could sit undercover (i.e. not directly exposed to the rain), and have a valve to act as a shutoff switch from the funnel to direct the h20 to one or more drip tubes of different sizes and/or drip frequencies. Heck, you could...

Re: Foam insulation on underside of roof - anyone have it?

Have you determined the cause of the mold? It needs moisture and a food source to thrive - eliminate both as much as possible and you'll be in good shape. One common cause is bathroom exhaust fans vented into the attic instead of being ducted to exterior air. Next step is to get a good vapor barrier...

Re: Bridge Placement Headaches

A good way to double check... Stewmac.com, use their online Fret Position Calculator - I believe that your bridge is listed at the bottom of the page. Enter your scale length, etc and it will help you to locate the bridge correctly.

You might want to consider Ebaying it, and using the profits to purchase stock to build a Brad Robertson acoustic from scratch.

Re: convert to a 10 string

If you can get your hands on a copy, Melvyn Hiscock's original "Make your own Guitar" book includes a well detailed chapter on an eight string (four pair) bass build. I truly dig the way those sound... Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom" or a lot of Cheap Trick's songs come to mind.

Al - the new catalog arrived on my doorstep this week, and your sharpeners caught my eye. Very nice indeed. Being a cheap yankee, since seeing them I've been daydreaming about a sharpener that could produce that sort of edge. So far I'm thinking a half round file (chainsaw blade file?) seated in the...

Re: Electrical wiring for shop

My vote: yes, if it's a hobby shop 60A should be sufficient - especially as you're taking lighting out of the equation. Because you're in a garage, you'll most likely have to be ground fault protected due to the possibility of a wet floor. I'd second the suggestion for receptacles every four feet or...

I'm torn... killer design and execution, and I'm particularly fond of the aged diamond plate. My only issue is with the incredibly realistic bridge grunge. It gives me the willies... like I need to run out and get a tetanus shot.
