Sad to say it is still in progress, hope to get back on it this fall sometime. I will be adding some photos then, stay tuned.

I don't have a photo of the neck by itself, but here are a few of the rough in shots.

Re: Repairing a viol neck-to-pegbox break

It's about done, I have to rub out the finish and tie the frets on. Then take it over to my teacher this weekend and get her assessment of it. The graft isn't horrible but not as invisible as I had hoped.

Re: Repairing a viol neck-to-pegbox break

Thanks Fred, if I totally screw it up, I'll contact you. At this point, I have the pegbox attached to the new (mostly carved) neck and am carving out the part of the graft in the pegbox.

Re: Dulcimer top and fingerboard/soundboard

The viol I'm working on had Pegheds installed. They worked well but were hard to remove without damage. They have a fine thread (left or right) on the barrel.

Re: Repairing a viol neck-to-pegbox break

It was not a clean break and I cannot get a good mechanical fit, so I will try a neck graft (i.e., make a new neck and splice the old pegbox on to it) as Clay and others have suggested. I got the fingerboard off pretty cleanly so I hope to reuse that. The next question was the body/neck joint. Yes, ...

Re: Repairing a viol neck-to-pegbox break

I got the nut off and noticed that I could wiggle the pegbox (not very much, but freely). So the glue was a non-issue. I did drill out the dowels and was able to pull it apart without much effort at all. IMG_20190710_191114.jpg IMG_20190710_191057.jpg IMG_20190710_191041.jpg IMG_20190710_191033.jpg ...

Repairing a viol neck-to-pegbox break

Hi all, I recently acquired a viola da gamba that had a broken neck with kind of an ugly repair. I believe it to be mechanically strong, but it bugs me and I'm looking for suggestions. I did not spend much for this instrument so not a big deal if I totally wreck it. Pictures below. I'm pretty sure i...

Re: Translucent white stain

Minwax makes a white pickling stain, we found it at Lowe's and Home Depot. We just finished using on our oak kitchen cabinets and it does let the grain show through. I would certainly try it on a scrap first.
