Loss of bass lowering the saddle?

Hi all, I recently purchased a used Blueridge Br160 on Ebay. I don't like buying guitars without trying them first, but it was a good deal and these guitars are not easy to find here in Spain. It was in good state when I received it, but the strings where too high, and even more with medium strings ...

Pore filling on Granadillo

Hi all, I am an amateur builder, I have finished a few instruments and I am about to finish another one. This is a flat top acoustic guitar with granadillo back and sides. I have never finished a guitar with this wood type, I will use nitro. I read somewhere that pore filling is not necessary for gr...

Re: Sanding top kerfing, head and tail blocks

Jorge, I think flat on the top is OK but remember that the back is not only domed but it tapers from tail block to the head, Normally the lower bout is about the same thickness but the sides taper significantly from the waist to the neck. I rough cut that taper into my sides before I bend them but ...

Re: Sanding top kerfing, head and tail blocks

Huss and Dalton build some of their guitars with a domed top pulled down to a flat set of rims. They say this adds a bit of tension which helps tone. Yes, I read that somewhere as well. They call that line "Traditional", so I guess that's the "vintage way". Nowadays I think most people build a radi...

Re: Sanding top kerfing, head and tail blocks

Thank you both! That is some interesting information. Investigating a bit more I think that sanding the linings flat on the top must have been how Martin used to build their guitars back in the 30s, so that's why Stewmac is suggesting this method (?). Of course that does not mean it is the best way,...

Sanding top kerfing, head and tail blocks

I have built a few instruments before at a luthiers workshop so this is not my first instrument, but this time i I wanted to build a guitar for a friend, so as I don't have a workshop I bought one of those Stewmac dreadnought kits. Looks good but checking the instructions (https://www.stewmac.com/fr...

Re: Please help: neck reshape: yes or no

Thanks everyone for your replies. It is very useful information for me. I am not worried about the truss rod, as I wouldn't be removing any wood (or very little) from the center of the neck, as I think thickness is ok. It's only the shape that I don't like, and removing only some wood from the shoul...

Please help: neck reshape: yes or no

Hi all, I've been a member of the forum for a while but it's been long since I last posted something. I have a doubt regarding acoustic guitar modification and I hope someone can help. I am an amateur builder and repairman. This is not my way of living but I learnt building with two different luthie...

Re: Popping noise with LR Baggs Lyric + Ultrasound DI Plus

Well, I changed the battery in the preamp and the noise is gone. So aparently that was the problem. A silly thing, yes, but I would have thought that a weak battery would cause weak sound... but this kind of old motorbike noise...? Just like Daryl said, digital age brings strange issues... Just post...

Re: Popping noise with LR Baggs Lyric + Ultrasound DI Plus

Thanks Daryl. LR Baggs replied saying that the Lyric should work with any preamp, and suggested checking cables and the battery in the preamp. The cables are fine, not sure about the battery. It looks strange to me that a bad battery could cause this problem, I would think it would just stop working...

Re: Popping noise with LR Baggs Lyric + Ultrasound DI Plus

Hi Daryl, Yes, the Lyric also has a bulit-in preamp. I just wanted to use the Ultrasound with it to equalize the sound a bit before it gets to the mixing desk and have a bit more control over the sound accessible to me if I play live. But to be honest I am an ignorant about "sampling frequencies"......

Re: Popping noise with LR Baggs Lyric + Ultrasound DI Plus

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have tested the preamp with another guitar and there's no noise. The Lyric without the preamp works fine... so I'm afraid I can't use the Lyric with this preamp... :( Not good. Anyone knows why? Just out of curiosity...

Cheers

Popping noise with LR Baggs Lyric + Ultrasound DI Plus

Hi, I was looking for a pickup to amplify my Martin guitar and I finally decided to try the LR Baggs Lyric, it's an internal microphone. I read goods reviews so I decided to give it a try. I installed it this morning, plugged it in... seems to work... then I tried with an acoustic preamp that I alre...

Re: Undersaddle piezo in Martin 000-18

Hi David, I also thought about that, but all the undersaddle piezos that I've seen do have the wire at the end. And the position of the X braces really makes it impossible, even if you drill at an angle. I really like the sound when using a microphone (of course it's the real sound), but I've had ba...
