Stick Quintar: prototype 0

Awhile ago I've made a very simple stick bass . After a couple of months of playing I tried hanging it around my neck instead of using a stand and this worked out fine, giving me more room to move around. Recently I've made a six string version of it. Overview stick quintar.JPG Building it was a pre...

Re: What other things do you guys make?

I've been building and flying some simple kites with my kiddo's, build from garbage bags and some bamboo sticks.
(see my-best-kite.com for good plans).

Also I try to play in tune chords on a fretless guitar and let my beard grow, so there's much to do!

Re: My first real acoustic guitar in 43 years

I have a book that is called The Magician's Nephew.
If I recall correctly it's about a nephew who wanted an acoustic guitar.... ;)

Outstanding work Dave!

Re: leather covered top bobbin pickup

I say: go for it. I saw someone covering the whole body of an electric with alligator leather, looked very nice.

That's a cool bass you've build Jason!
I was wondering why did you choose for just an inch of difference between the two scalelengths?
To put a little more tension on the low B string?

Alas, I just took of the strings of the instrument where I had the pickup mounted on. I'll make some clips, but it may take a while.

Good you've decided, go for it!

There's only one thing.. You need to replace the strings for bass strings now... ;-)

Re: Removable neck acoustic instrument ?

Cool.
Did you took a picture when you strung her up?
Maybe a downside from placing the soundhole on the upper bout is that you "block" the hole with your playing arm, but you can check that easily.

Re: Removable neck acoustic instrument ?

Cool, I like it. It will really be a unique guitar!
Have you made up your mind for the shape of the soundhole(s).
As a suggestion: personally I always like soundholes made in the side.

Are you planning to install some kind of transducer to pickup the sound?

Re: flat low z pickup

I find it really interesting. Next week I get some hpl-plate cutoffs of around 1/16 of a inch thickness, when using this as a bobbin I can get an pickup with a height under 3/16 and would fit under the strings without having to rout a cavity. Of course it is done before: http://www.cigarboxnation.co...

flat low z pickup

I've build a prototype of a thin low impedance pickup. Which is basically a regular pickup with only a few turns. The output is a lower then a regular pickup but when connected to a microphone input I get a very decent sound. I used: 4x 25x5x3mm Neod. magnets 2x piece of 1.6mm cardboard appr. AWG 44...
