Re: Compensated nut location: how does it relate to compensation at the saddle
I find that with 0.5mm compensation at the nut, the saddle compensation is less dramatic; I file the individual nut slots back if necessary. It leads to less compromise for where the intonation is proper. With many production guitars, even with careful setup, the 1st to 3rd frets are sharp unless th...

Re: Tuning Machines
Both Sperzel and Hipshot make excellent tuners in the US. I use Sperzel on most of my ukes, Hipshot on most of my basses, and one or the other on most of my guitars. They are great companies to work with and will sell custom sets directly to medium output builders and small retail shops like me. I h...

Re: Visiting Luthier Challenge.
You can do an awful lot with a drill press. I use a flexible rubber sanding disc designed for metal work mounted in a press to rough out my carved and archet tops. I use a pin router now, but you can use the depth stop to drill top thickness reference points to sand out the inside. A safe-t-planer c...

Re: Paul Kincaid's 2nd archtop guitar
I would say that it's quite a lot louder than a 335 or other semi-hollow, but doesn't have the bass response of a larger full hollow instrument.

Re: Paul Kincaid's 2nd archtop guitar
I went with the Spanish heel mostly because it is how I have been making my ukuleles recently. It also lends itself well to the complete lack of space around the neck joint due to the 24th fret body join and neck pickup position.

What factors allow lower action on some guitars than others?
I'm aware of many of the variables involved, but some instruments just seem to allow much lower action without getting excessive buzzing. Zon basses are likely the best example of instruments that I've personally played with hyper low action and still clean sound. So- if it's the same scale, same st...

Replacement tailpiece for Brandt mandolin
I have a vintage Brandt Mandolin in for extensive repairs right now. The cracked staves, broken headstock, missing binding, and finish issues are expected to go just fine. Where I'm stuck is finding an appropriate replacement for the tailpiece. Part of it is still there, but it has some string tabs ...

Re: Bosch Colt router losing power at all speeds.
I may just buy a new router and keep the one from class for parts. The parts aren't too expensive, but they add up quick and I'll eventually need parts for my own.

Bosch Colt router losing power at all speeds.
I have a router that I use for teaching that recently started having some problems. It's at a public shop that I am not always at, so I don't always know how the tools are being used and they get a lot of "use". I have two identical routers at my own shop that are older and used more often...
