Re: Five-String Fiddle On the Way

All done! (OK...it is as done as it is going to get, today.) I discovered that I had no 5-string tailpieces, so I carved one of Osage Orange...but I think it is heavy enough that is affecting the sound a bit. The real five-string tailpiece (Wittner) will arrive Wednesday. Meanwhile, I evidently misp...

Re: Five-String Fiddle On the Way

Here's what it looks like this evening...I anticipate about three more coats before I call it quits. The front and back photos look WAY too yellow, but I don't know how to color-correct, so we are stuck with them. The scroll photo looks about right, I'd say, so... maybe that will help you imagine wh...

Re: Five-String Fiddle On the Way

Thank you kindly, neighbor! It now has one coat of propolis, and several of varnish, so it looks completely different. I will try to post photos this evening. I abandoned my original plan of "golden-brown" and went with a richer red-brown, with golden highlights. I have no idea what it will look lik...

Five-String Fiddle On the Way

There is still a lot of work to be done, but this is my newest--a 5-string fiddle, of local big-leaf maple and Englemann spruce. All I have on it so far is the ground/sealer coat...probably will begin varnishing tomorrow evening. http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb103/Chet_Bishop/frontresized-3.jp...

Keep 'em really sharp, and they do some great things.
Keep us posted.

Re: Could someone offer a couple pointers on my scroll carving (photos)

Have you tried a scraper? I make scrapers of hard steel, quite thin (.015"?) Blue-tempered watch-spring works well, or, if you can find an old drywall mudding knife (especially a large one) you can make several out of such a blade. I have scrapers I made that somewhat fit the curve of the cross-sect...

BTW, this is the five-string that sold at the show: http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb103/Chet_Bishop/Frontcolorcorrected.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb103/Chet_Bishop/sidecolorcorrected.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb103/Chet_Bishop/backcolorcorrected.jpg Nothing fancy-- jus...

Re: 2012 Marylhurst University Musical Instrument Makers' Show

Well--I saw Mr. King many times, but was busy at our table, so I never knew what he made. Sorry you didn't stop by. I did talk to two or three from Maestronet, as I used to spend time over there...but that's all.

2012 Marylhurst University Musical Instrument Makers' Show

Here are a few photos from the show: This is how the room looked with just the makers present. We had 500+ people show up each day. http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb103/Chet_Bishop/wholeshowresized.jpg This fellow (standing, below) is Bob Oswald-- he asked me to coach him through building his fi...

Re: Resources on building upright bass?

Oh, BTW, the shell came from DePaule Supply (google 'em). Andy DePaule is a good guy to deal with. He has a company based in Oregon, but his shell experts are in Viet Nam, where he has connections through his wife. They will make you any kind of inlay you want. The fleur-de-lis was one of their stan...

Re: Resources on building upright bass?

What would you like to know? It is modelled after the William Tarr plan available from Peter Chandler. The original plan called for a flat back, but I don't like flat backs, so I made it a round-back, but only about 25-30mm of arch. The wood is big leaf maple, quite plain, from John Tepper, at Teppe...

Re: relief on violin fingerboards

When I press the string to the board on both ends simultaneously, thus making the string a "straightedge", I expect to see approximately the diameter of the string underneath the string itself. Probably there are more sophisticated ways to approach it. The center of that scoop is not in the center o...

Re: Resources on building upright bass?

I have only built one bass so far (hope to build my second this year), but I used the Peter Chandler book (So you want to make a double Bass) and was aided a good deal in set-up by the Chuck Traeger book (Setup and Repair of the Double Bass for Optimum Sound). Mr. Chandler did not go into much deati...
