Wow! I am guessing this is not your first build though based on the binding and purfling details. Really looks fantastic.

Re: Strings for Catherine

Brian, You really have given me something to think about. Like most folks I have been focused on the string winding material and not considering the tension. From string experiments on my Taylor auditorium, I did find that medium or heavier strings changed the tone to a stronger fundamental and some...

Eldon, I use JJB Prestige 220 piezo sensors, glued to the inside of the front plate in front of where the bridge posts are located. A picture might help: B042 - Pickup Elements installed.jpg I get plenty of volume, even direct into a channel on an acoustic amp or PA head. A preamp can warm up the to...

Re: Hello from Wisconsin

Hello Eric! Your story is kind of like mine. I am on the down hill roll towards retiring after 38+ years as an engineer. For more than 20 years I have maintained an on-off woodworking home shop that might be loosely defined as a self sustaining hobby through custom furniture, cabinets, etc. I also h...

Nice. I like the way you joined the back grain pattern.

You are on the slippery slope to obsessive lutherie now. After some time you will not resist the urge to build again!

Re: Benedetto Archtop Build

Nice job. Looks like a bone insert in the bridge - my preference for acoustic tone. It's looks fairly tall - can you share what your neck angle ended up at? My preference is to have the bridge sit on the top perpendicular to the strings, rather than slanted to achieve the intonation compensation. To...

Re: General Finishes Waterbase Topcoat - SM is pushing this - anyone tried it?

An update from my prior posts on the polishing process for Enduro-Var: After waiting another 2 weeks or so (about 28 - 30 days total cure), and letting a couple of binding edge touchups cure, I used 2000 grit paper to blend in a couple of blemishes, and then polished by hand the entire body and neck...

Re: How long to "settle" before final adjustments?

I don't know. Stringing up in the white just seems like an opportunity to get dirt and oil into the wood before it is protected by finish. Stringing up in the white gives me an opportunity to ensure that the fit and playability is what I hoped it would be. I don't worry about having everything that...

Re: How long to "settle" before final adjustments?

Brian, I have strung up each of my builds in the white. I actually leave the neck chunky at first and refine it with playing in. About a week and you should know where you are going to end up. My experience so far - the finish has not changed the final setup significantly. For strings, phosphor-bron...

Chuck, You are right about that post in this thread - in fact it is so good that it shouldn't be hidden 4 pages deep ;-) As a tutorial for your method I think it deserves to be proudly displayed. I was tempted to copy it into the Journal as an alternative method, but this was your work and your meth...

Re: General Finishes Waterbase Topcoat - SM is pushing this - anyone tried it?

Chuck and others, This thread has motivated me to rewrite the chapter in my Archtop Build Journal to update the method for Enduro-Var. I have excerpted the chapter pages and created a new thread here: http://www.mimf.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4349 Of course, I am using foam brushes and a automo...

Finishing with Enduro-Var Water Based Urethane - Detailed Method

Re: Router question DEWALT DWP611

I have the Ridgid brand installed in a home made binding jig. The adjustment works great, and the price was really good (less than $100 USD when I bought it). I use the Stew-Mac set for binding ledges, and a 1/4" spiral carbide cutter and other 1/4" router bits for milling ebony bridge parts for arc...

Re: General Finishes Waterbase Topcoat - SM is pushing this - anyone tried it?

Chuck, Some lessons learned: - Being more disciplined about removing the flaws at 600 grit, and then working through each grit (1200, 1500, 2000) with wet sanding definately made the polishing easier. - It seems the schedule for me will be 5 day sand and polish, then final polish around 10 days tota...

Re: General Finishes Waterbase Topcoat - SM is pushing this - anyone tried it?

OK, so last night I disassembled the guitar for sanding and polishing. At this point, the finish has been curing for 12 days and the odor is nearly gone. I went almost all the way back to the beginning, doing the entire body with each step: - Wet sanded 600 grit to level out the brush marks and a co...
