Re: Now it's awl messed up!

thanks guys. I steamed it like mad today and got most of it. then after some light sanding made it look pretty good IMO. not perfect but just looks like a small dot in the spruce.

Re: Now it's awl messed up!

Peter brings up a good point. This is raw, it's clean, just a dark shadow looking down the puncture. It doesn't go all the way through. I was thinking about trying to steam it, but wanted to hold off until at least a few of you smart guys suggested it. I guess it's basically like a really big divot ...

Now it's awl messed up!

So, I did a terrible thing. I dropped a my scratch awl and it hit the spruce top of my current build. upon inspection I found a nice little hole. Is there any way to make this go away?

Re: question about rubber hose

Ryan, how are you doing your bindings now and why the desire to change? Are you having an issue? IIRC you are using tape, maybe you just need to tweak the process a bit. Yes I am currently doing tape. I'm not planning to quit, I just want to add a wrap to the process to get it in tighter than I can...

Re: question about rubber hose

well now i'm feeling kind of stupid. For some reason I really thought this was a thing everyone was doing, wrapping surgical tubing around the guitars to pull in the binding really tight. I'm seeing other similar ideas like rubber straps, bands and inner tube strips, but not as much of the tubing li...

of course i meant "rubber" in the most generic sense. be it silicon, latex or whatever, but that's basically what I'm trying to find out.

question about rubber hose

I've decided to start using rubber hose to clamp down the binding like I've seen so many of you do. Keeping the binding tight has always been a problem for me and I feel this will yield a better result. I've looked up rubber hose such as this and found several different types for different purposes ...

Re: Please, your thoughts on rasps

I use the microplane. Seriously one of my favorite tools in the shop. it cuts as quick and clean. but then I always see people using it on cooking shows and I yell at the TV, "Hey, why are you zesting a lemon with a guitar neck carver?"

Here's a batch he just did.
After he makes them his wife wraps a band around the middle and sows it on for the neck strap.

Bow Ties....

Hey all! So, my dad has recently stumbled into a new hobby. He's started using scraps of wood around the shop to make wooded bow ties. At first I was like... :? but now that he's got some done they actually look pretty cool and people are responding well to them. He's also going to start maki...

Re: legal help, stolen guitar

The store owners opened up and started talking about this case yesterday using social media. The word spread quickly and has enough of a stir in town that the SPD went into GC and put a hold on the guitar and assigned a new detective to the case. All of a sudden the GC store manager seems willing to...

Re: legal help, stolen guitar

They filed a police report and sent it to the prosecutor's office. If it were a theft case they could go in and take it. But since they're dealing with it as a check fraud case they can't. Apparently if you steal something by means of a bad check it's not actually theft, even though his intent was t...

legal help, stolen guitar

First, I want to make it clear that I am not trying to smear the name of Guitar Center. that being said.... Some friends of mine have a music shop and have recently been the victims of check fraud, which to me amounts to theft. A man came in and bought a brand new Eastman E40D with a bad check. The ...

See you in April, Grumpy Gen-Xer <G>...
