Re: Strat truss rod is stuck

Thanks everyone for your input on this. I did not realize Fender might still be able to do something about this since he is not the original owner. A phone call to my Fender rep couldn't hurt anyway. He's a nice guy. In the mean time I've explained everything to the owner who has since picked the gu...

Re: Strat truss rod is stuck

update: I put some oil in and got it to break loose. It's turning quite freely now but it seems the truss rod is maxed out. I get to a certain point and it just stops. Seems to be the same point where it was when I started. I'm not sure at this point whether to pursue removing the plug and trying to...

Re: Strat truss rod is stuck

Gordon, thanks. I'll try putting some oil or something in it to try to loosen it up. I've also seen a lot of guys on the webs talk about putting heat on the nut with a soldering iron. I dont think that will work with this configuration. It would probably just melt the finish and burn the walnut plug...

Strat truss rod is stuck

I had a guy come into the store today needing a set up on a 50th Anniversary Strat. This is the second place he took it to have it set up after getting a great deal on the guitar. The other place didn't get it where he wanted it. But the action is rather pretty high but there is still buzzing high u...

Re: My new job...

hey guys, thanks for all your input. I sat back and just let this thread rest for a little while so I could see how things were shaking out with the new job. After a full week I've learned a lot and realized that I was really over thinking things. There's still a lot of things I have to learn on the...

Re: My new job...

i ageee with gordon as well. though I would never intentionally lie to a customer, but it's a good reminder that even if we are well intentioned we better be able to deliver on what we say. as for the consignment vs. factory brand; 35% seems high to me. I've shown mine in 3 different stores and neve...

Re: My new job...

they absolutely make more on factory than my consignment and also have more invested in the factory guitars and only two wall hangers invested in mine.

My new job...

Well, things have been very slow in the construction field in our area, and work has been nearly non-existent so far this year. My guitar building business hasn't exactly taken off like I had hoped quite yet. Things have been quite scary so far this year, so I decided to try to find a way to supplem...

the Fishman/Fender PM preamp and electronics

I'm working with a customer on a guitar design right now and he wants it set up with onboard preamp, tuner and electronics. He really wants the Fishman/Fender PM model as found on the Fender Paramount series. I am not familiar with these personally so I don't know how they perform, but he really wan...

side port placement options...

I'm working with a customer on a design for a build and I am needing a little advice on the matter of the side port. I normally place the side port where most do, above the waist just right before the curve of the shoulder, or maybe even a little into the curve. He wants a side port, but he also wan...

Re: this crack just won't close up

that's why I try to stay away from repairs. I'm always afraid they won't be good enough. I sent the customer a picture and he said he likes it, it gives it character. not all customers would be so gracious about something like that.

Re: this crack just won't close up

Update: I got the splint in but I'm not overly happy with it. I couldn't find the original offcuts, it's probably a back graft, UTG, and soundhole patch in some guitars out there somewhere. the problem is, I was trying to match the color first. Big mistake as I have figured out that I will not be ab...

Re: HELP!! Side Bending

Get a bigger pipe. that's good advice. But don't trash the one you've already made. I have a 1" pipe that I use for bending my headstock binding. I have some really tight radii that I'd never get with a bigger one. In fact the 1" is a little too big for some places. My point being, even though a big...

Re: this crack just won't close up

Thanks Barry. I agree, I don't think there's any way to make this repair invisible. But the owner had already resolved that it was un-salvageable (no faith.) So being able to save it at all should make him happy.

Re: this crack just won't close up

let me jump back in here real quick before someone responds. A couple thoughts I've had: 1) I could just let it wait until the humid season gets into full swing and see if it closes up on it's own. I'd have to clean the glue out of the crack if I can; otherwise it will probably just keep it propped ...

this crack just won't close up

I have a guitar in the shop, one of my builds, and I'm trying to repair a crack in the top. The guitar is about 3 years old and belongs to a friend of mine. This winter was extremely harsh in our area as far as cold temps and low humidity. I've seen problems everywhere this year, not just in instrum...
