What's the best gram strength hide glue to use for a set neck?

I'm getting ready to try using hide glue for a set neck on an electric build. I bought some BT&E 315 gram strength High Stress granules at Woodcraft. When I got home I got to thinking I might have bought some from LMI six to eight years ago. After digging around for awhile I found it. I don't be...

Re: Looking for tips on dying a mahogany neck

Hi Mark, good to be back. I drop in and look every once in awhile but just haven't posted anything. The reason I ask about mixing is because I was unable to find a burnt umber dye and assumed you had mixed it from Transtint or other brand colors. Thanks everyone for your help.

Re: Looking for tips on dying a mahogany neck

Thanks for all the great tips. Mario, any suggestions for mixing burnt umber? I'm not sure what colors of tint to mix to get it.

Looking for tips on dying a mahogany neck

I just finished up a mahogany neck for an electric guitar and it's too light in color for my taste. I've tried a variety of brown Transtint colors mixed in alcohol on scrap but haven't found anything I like yet. Does anyone have a color of dye they've used on mahogany that worked well. I know this i...

Re: Problem with 8" Grizzly jointer

Thanks for the tips guys. I have White's book and was hoping I could get by with my 4' straight edge and not have to build his master bar. I guess I need to re think that. David, I already have a spiral cutter and am not having trouble getting clean cuts. Just having problems with a length wise tape...

Problem with 8" Grizzly jointer

I'm having a problem with my jointer tapering boards. The end fed into the cutter first gets more taken off than the other end. After a few passes the board gets a noticeable taper from one end to the other. I have a book on machine set up but no mention of this in the book or the owners manual. I d...

Re: Smoked lacquer finish

Thanks Steve. I use waterborne lacquer so it won't be flammable. It will most likely be awhile till I get around to testing. I have four other builds I'm trying to finish up.

Re: Smoked lacquer finish

Thanks Jason. That's pretty much the process I was thinking. Just not sure how to generate the sooty type smoke. Here is an example of the finish. http://www.harvesterguitars.com/completed/bavarian-tv/ You can find more on Instagram under Harvester Guitars.

Smoked lacquer finish

Is anyone familiar with a finish called "Smoked Lacquer" or "Candled Lacquer? I believe it was used on Wandre Guitars. I'm trying to find out how it was done if anyone knows. It looks like swirls of dark smoke is layered into the finish. Very cool looking. Thanks.

Re: New model by Jason Rodgers

You're really doing some extremely nice work Jason. Very unique. Love the stepped bevel. Always wanted to do that but couldn't quite figure out how it's done. Great design on the bridge and pickups too. Looking forward to seeing you at the convention.

Thanks Mark. Good to be back. It seems if I don't login for a few weeks I get dropped from post notices. I get busy and just forget to check in and see what's going on.

Very nice job Jason. Love the overall look. Clever idea on the switch. Did you make the pickup covers? I like the way they look. You really have been knocking them out. Excellent work!

Re: Experience with "Tried & True" finishes?

I haven't tried that product, but I recently used Osmo an oil product that David King suggested. I applied it to a body and it gave it a very nice satin smooth finish that feels great. Just a thought. A little pricey but easy to use and doesn't require many coats.

Re: Need advice on using TransTint Dye on curly maple

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm trying to highlight the grain more. My plan was to wipe on a more concentrated coat and let it dry then sand back and apply a less concentrated coat like PRS does. Can I do that with it mixed in the finish and get the same effect?
