Removing a Walden neck.

Hi all. I own a Walden D550 that requires a neck reset. I've done this before on other guitars and am not afraid of the work. However, I understand that Walden necks are bolt-on necks. Humm...I cannot see any bolt heads at the neck block, just a chunk of wood with the name Walden printed on it. is t...

Homemade shooting board?

Anyone have any plans for a simple shooting board for joining plate halves? Not interested in joiner plans, just a simple shooting board. Something went wrong with the only one I've made, so I want to see what you've done. Thanks!

Re: My repairs, restorations and alterations.

What's wrong with the violin bow? That reverse camber looks terrible.

Re: Does the smell of Truoil go away?

We are talking about the Birchwood & Casey stuff right? About a year ago they did a run that went bad and had a smell somewhat like rotten fish. This has been corrected in newer batches. Maybe you got some of that run?

Re: Violin rib thickness....why?

Sorry I didn't get back to this for some time. Thanks for the responses guys. I wasn't thinking about a drastic thickness change. I usually go to 1.2mm as I always thought that was standard. I have some rib stock that comes in right at 1mm that I thought might be a tad to thin, but it sounds like it...

Re: Siezed up truss rod adjuster on low end Starcaster

As long as the donor guitar body is truely garbage, and the neck is a bolt on (weren't Fender acoustics all bolt-on?) the idea has merit. If it's glued in, then the only true (and easiest) fix for this is to pop off the fingerboard, see what's what with the rod, and glue the board back on (if it doe...

What gives on the Bowed Stringed Instruments and Bows page?

I've come back to the forum after being away for over half a year (had to re-ergister too), only to find some of my posts from back then still on the first page here. So, ahhh...been a little slow lately?

Re: Piano Wood Violin

Really like this thread. Maybe I missed something, but what is the roundish staining all around the top plate maybe an inch in from the edges? Wait! reading this thread again, I see it is from a laminated glue joint? Nice fiddle but that doesn't look right.

Hide glue as a violin ground?

I've read about hide glue sizing as a ground for violins, which seems pretty common to some builders, though I've never tried it. How does it stand up to other traditional grounds? And how is it mixed (extra water amount)? What would happen if other proteins (say...egg white) were mixed in? Anyone h...

Animal/human figurehead on classic violins?

Did any of the classic Cremona (or other) makers carve animal or human figureheads instead of standard scrolls on their necks? And if so, is there somewhere on the web to view them? Thanks!

Salt in hide glue?

Just rewad the post about using urea in hide glue to extend working time. I have also read somewhere that plain table salt can be used as well. Any truth to this?

Yea, heh, that old TV has been sitting in my garage since "Leave it to Beaver" originally went off the air! I'm one of those 'use it if you got' it type of guys!

Bender done!

I have finished the bender mentioned in my other post (see pic below). I got very lucky with this. I used a 4" piece of pipe that I squished down to an oval of about 3-1/2". There is still so much air traveling through the pipe that I can use it with the igniter pluged directly into the wa...

Re: Bending a barbecue igniter?

I just finished mine today but haven't fired it up yet. The elements lightly touch the pipe, which is about 1/8" thick.

How are you guys controling the heat? Most pics I see are using what looks like a light dimmer switch. But this thing runs about 550 watts. Suggestions on this?

Re: Bending a barbecue igniter?

I have another one I'm building for guitar sides. I'm using a 4" piece of pipe for that one, but the charcoal igniter I'm using for that one (unbent) fits inside pretty loose! I was thinking of using the cooling flange on the igniter to bolt it to the end of the pipe to keep it steady. Make sen...

Re: Bending a barbecue igniter?

Okay, it seems like bending these things both cold and hot has been successful for folks here. Another question about it: Looks like it will have to be bent at both ends; the outer end where the loop around is, and at the handle side. Looking at the handle side, if you place it in a vise at the area...

Re: Violin rib thickness....why?

Thanks for all the responses guys. Sounds like a little experimenting is in order (though I'm sure it's been done a thousand times). Michael, your info about the Roth's addresses my original question about the effect of rib thickness on sound. Were the Roth ribs thinned down with the violin intact? ...

Violin rib thickness....why?

Over the centuries the thickness of violin ribs has standardized to roughly 1.2mm. I've always assumed that this is because such thickness was determined to have both the strength needed and the least effect on compromising sound viabration. But why? What detrimental effect do ribs that are a little...

Re: Bending a barbecue igniter?

Okay, I'll bend it today....but, since this is closely related, I'll ask it here (if that's a mistake let me know.

What size pipe are you folks using for violin ribs? I was thinking about the tight bends in the C bouts. Is 2-1/2" too big? Thanks!
