Re: What other things do you guys make?

I make messes real well. Occasionally build some furniture, made some knives and in the planning stage to build a kayak or two.

Re: Links

Simon, you are correct about me being a desktop user. Even on the occasions I borrow my wife's or son's laptop the first thing I do is plug a mouse into it.
Thanks Charlie. It is no biggie, just thought if there was a setting to change on my end I would do it.

Links

When I click on a link in a discussion instead of opening a new tab or window I am taken out of the MIMF site and to the link. Is there some way I can change the way links are handled so that a new tab is opened? I know I can right click on the link and choose to open the link in a new tab or window...

The deadline came and went I do not see any mention of a winning logo. Which logo was chosen?

Re: Paint Stripper

Cool front blew in Saturday and the highs are only about 90 now. Feels good.
I had considered the heat gun but I was concerned about the lead fumes. Turns out the cartridges for the respirator rated for the fumes is not too expensive ($25 or so), so I may go that route.

Paint Stripper

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good paint stripper. I have to strip several layers of paint off of an OLD door and the two strippers I have tried so far aren't getting the job done. I have tried Kleen-Strip KS-3 Premium and Savogran Strypeeze. Neither one is cutting very well. At this rate ...

Re: Crown? Clearance? Baritone uke

Interesting thought on the fretwire. Many mandolinist now are having larger wire used on their instruments because it is easier to fret than the small wire. Remember you don't push the strings down to the fretboard so wire that is a bit taller means less pressure is needed to fret the note cleanly. ...

Re: bridge lifting off

Brad, do you have any hide glue. For bridges you might want to consider it to avoid problems with the joint creeping over time.

Bryan, you don't have to wait for the archives, the links page still has Wfret listed. BTW a link to the links page is at the top of the forum along with a link to the MIMF book store and tool store.

Well it is not for download but you could use the one from StewMac. It has several instruments to choose from including dulcimer.

Re: OT: coping saws

I use a coping saw on baseboard, crown, chair rail and anything else it is the best tool for. But I still keep a block plane in my tool belt too and use several other sizes as needed. I know trim carpenters that don't own a plane of any kind. Well that is probably not true, they have a Makita power ...

Re: Jon Whitney's backpacking banjo

Jon, looks good. Are we going to be graced with a sound sample? Also a question about the Yellowstone" head. You mentioned that real hide heads self tension as they dry, what about the "Yellowstone"? How is it tensioned on this mandolin? Also are the panhead screws straight through th...

Re: The next MIMF challenge- ideas anyone?

You could do a non-traditional or folk instrument challenge. I know that is a broad category but I think they need to be a popular instrument style or be a broad enough category to bring in several participants. Having said that, I really think another $100 telecaster/lp/stratocaster(ish) or acousti...

Re: Acoustic guitar finish

I would think that if it is lacquer that once you have enough of a build coat on it you can level sand it, go through several grits of Micromesh (or equivalent) then polish.

Re: The next MIMF challenge- ideas anyone?

I think another $100 (or $XXX) challenge would be good. They seem to get good participation and viewer interest as evidenced by the number of comments they elicit.
After all everyone wants to be amazed by the instruments that can be built on the cheap by some of the wonderful builders here.

Re: Brazilian Cherry for fretboard?

For what it is worth I built a canjo with Jatoba neck and frets installed directly into it with my youngest son when he was nine. He is now 16 and it has held up fine. I did not seal it with anything and I like the way it looks.

Re: 100 mile guitar - what woods to use?

I may be reading too much into this from the description of the Benedetto Sinfonietta " Bob took great pains to fashion this featherweight into a functional and spectacularly voiced instrument" . Like I said I may be reading too much into that statement, but it suggests to me that a lot of...
