Re: Building a Semi-Hollow Archtop Bass
Thanks guys for the responses. I've decided on quilted big leaf maple. This is a Casino I made recently using quilted maple.

Building a Semi-Hollow Archtop Bass
I've been asked to build a a semi-hollow archtop bass similar to the Guild Starfire. I'm trying to decide whether I should go with mahogany or maple for the top, back, sides, and center block. My customer is interested in the "woofy" sound from the big Gibson pickups of the '60s.

Protecting Acrylic Art
I've been asked to spray a protective coating over some acrylic artwork on a strat. Any suggestions as to what I should use? I normally shoot nitro.

Re: ES 330/ Casino
Wow, Barry, thanks for the reference. The bracing appears to be spruce and is fitted to the inner contour of the top like on the 335 without the kerfing. I assume its 4" wide to accommodate the TOM posts. I wonder about the neck block. Is it 4" wide also and just long enough to handle the ...

ES 330/ Casino
I'm considering building an ES 330/ Casino style guitar for a friend. I've made an ES 335 and am pretty sure all the ES style bodies are the same. I have a CNC and have programmed it to carve the top and back. My question is how was the 330 braced? I know it was fully hollow as opposed to the solid ...

Re: The Tree Quilted Mahogany
Yes, it matters. As I said above I built a guitar with wood from "the tree". Aside from its beauty I was amazed at the density and hardness of the wood. The guitar had a depth of sound much greater than any mahogany, quilted or otherwise, I've worked with in the past.

The Tree Quilted Mahogany
Does anybody know anything about the guy selling sets of quilted mahogany on thetreeguitarsets.com? They're beautiful, but are they legit? I built a guitar with a set from the tree that I got from RC several years ago. Great sounding guitar, the densest mahogany I've ever worked with.

Re: Gluing composite bridge on Martin
I just talked to Martin. They use 3M Scotchweld PR 600. It's a plastic/rubber instant adhesive cyanoacrylate.

Gluing composite bridge on Martin
I'm looking for a recommendation as to what glue to use when regluing a bridge on a Martin 00CXAE Grand Concert. The bridge is composite and the top is Formica. I know Titebond won't work (tried it). I'm thinking I'll have to use epoxy.

Neck removal on Martin 12 string
I was given a Martin GPC12PA4 to work on. The heel doesn't fit flush with the body. After removing the serial number block from the neck block I found that the bolt that attaches the neck to the body was missing. I replaced the bolt and tightened it but the heel still did not pull in flush. So now I...

Dealing With UV Cured Finish
Has anyone come up with a way to repair uv cured poly finishes other than ca? I've recently had a customer ask if I could make some modifications to his Taylor. Specifically an ebony backstrap on the peghead and abalone purfling on the top. I said I could do it but the finish would be a problem. Any...

Re: Moisture IN Poly Finish
I stand corrected. After reexamining the finish I believe it is lacquer. I thought I had touched it with acetone, but realized I hadn't. I was basing my assumption on the way it reacted to the alcohol. I lightly touched an inconspicuous spot with acetone and it softened. So my apologies Mark.

Re: Moisture IN Poly Finish
You're correct Mark, it is a red label FG-110, but the finish is not lacquer. It's poly. Acetone doesn't phase it. I work with nitro cellulose lacquer everyday. It's the only thing I shoot on my guitars. So I'm familiar with the product. I did manage to get rid of the milkiness however, basically wi...

Moisture IN Poly Finish
I'm resetting the neck on an old Yamaha F-110. After steaming out the neck there are milky splotches on the top of the guitar. I assume this is moisture that has penetrated the finish. If this was a nitro finish I would lightly wipe it with denatured alcohol, but this finish is poly something. The a...

Re: Shipping To Germany
So here's the follow up. I shipped the guitar two weeks ago via USPS Global Express. The post office partners with FedEx. I had valued the guitar at $2500. It got as far as Louisville (I'm in Paducah, KY) and FedEx rejected it. They only accept items valued at $2499 or less! I remailed the guitar ag...

Shipping To Germany
I just finished a guitar that I'm about to ship to a customer in Germany. The back and sides are cocobolo, sitka top, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, snakewood binding. I'm planning on shipping it USPS. It's my understanding that all I have to fill out is the simple Customs Declaration ...
