Dealing With UV Cured Finish

Has anyone come up with a way to repair uv cured poly finishes other than ca? I've recently had a customer ask if I could make some modifications to his Taylor. Specifically an ebony backstrap on the peghead and abalone purfling on the top. I said I could do it but the finish would be a problem. Any...

Re: Moisture IN Poly Finish

I stand corrected. After reexamining the finish I believe it is lacquer. I thought I had touched it with acetone, but realized I hadn't. I was basing my assumption on the way it reacted to the alcohol. I lightly touched an inconspicuous spot with acetone and it softened. So my apologies Mark.

Re: Moisture IN Poly Finish

You're correct Mark, it is a red label FG-110, but the finish is not lacquer. It's poly. Acetone doesn't phase it. I work with nitro cellulose lacquer everyday. It's the only thing I shoot on my guitars. So I'm familiar with the product. I did manage to get rid of the milkiness however, basically wi...

Moisture IN Poly Finish

I'm resetting the neck on an old Yamaha F-110. After steaming out the neck there are milky splotches on the top of the guitar. I assume this is moisture that has penetrated the finish. If this was a nitro finish I would lightly wipe it with denatured alcohol, but this finish is poly something. The a...

Re: Shipping To Germany

So here's the follow up. I shipped the guitar two weeks ago via USPS Global Express. The post office partners with FedEx. I had valued the guitar at $2500. It got as far as Louisville (I'm in Paducah, KY) and FedEx rejected it. They only accept items valued at $2499 or less! I remailed the guitar ag...

Shipping To Germany

I just finished a guitar that I'm about to ship to a customer in Germany. The back and sides are cocobolo, sitka top, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, snakewood binding. I'm planning on shipping it USPS. It's my understanding that all I have to fill out is the simple Customs Declaration ...

Thanks guys. The guitar going to Singapore has an adjustable neck joint to compensate for the extreme humidity.

Guitar Shipping

I am getting ready to ship two new guitars overseas. One is going to Germany, the other to Singapore. What problems should I anticipate in shipping. Should I worry about lack of humidity during transit?

Re: Suzuki C18 Neck Reset

That's pretty much what I told the guy, Barry. Plus the repair is going to be more than the guitar is worth, but there's sentimental value there. He wants the guitar for his granddaughter.

Suzuki C18 Neck Reset

Does anyone have any experience with a Suzuki C18 guitar? I've been asked to reset the neck on an old one, and I'm wondering what I might be in for. Hoping it's not one of those epoxied dovetails with no gap.

Guild Neck Reset

I'm getting ready to pull the neck on a Guild F50 BLD. I've not done one of these before. Is there anything I need to watch out for? Is it a standard dovetail joint?

1955 Epiphone Warped Pickguard

This is the pickguard from a 1955 Epiphone Zephyr Emperor Regent. I believe it's celluloid, however when scraping an edge it doesn't have that camphor smell. Any suggestions on how to flatten it?
