Re: What size ukulele?

Oh yes, tenor for sure! Much easier for most peoples' fingers.

Re: Saz?

I think you're probably thinking about the Tambour plan/article from American Lutherie. It is Plan #69 which you can find at http://www.luth.org/plans/instrument_plans.html#plan69. The article was in AL #120 - http://www.luth.org/back_issue/al117-120/al120.html

Re: Any successful method of jointing backs and tops without power jointer or planes?

Stephen, I think you could make the ramp whatever length suits you or your project. In fact, at some point in the near future I'll be building a much longer shooting board for a harpsichord soundboard I have to joint out of ~5 pieces of spruce. It ought to be interesting! But for for this particular...

Re: Any successful method of jointing backs and tops without power jointer or planes?

Greg, a #6 or even better a #7 would do a fine job. There are YT videos on 'restoring' old planes, flatten it as best you can, polish up that blade and most importantly build a proper shooting board. The time spent on building a shooting board is well worth it! I have tried all the methods discussed...

Re: uke uke

Their (Hana Lima Ia) construction manual is also very useful. There are a few places you have to interpolate a bit, but overall it is a solid approach. I have built about 15 tenors using their plan. Most of the other ukulele construction 'books' I've seen are not particularly compelling.

Re: Flamenco Ukulele - based on Barbero 1951

Thanks Patrick and Clay! The bracing is the same as shown on the plan in the link above (GAL Plan). Pretty typical for a "classical" style guitar, but note the slanted brace just below the sound hole in the plan picture in the link. The braces are pretty light given that it is a 'ukulele. I tried to...

Flamenco Ukulele - based on Barbero 1951

I've been away for a while and just completed this flamenco style 'ukulele based on 1951 Barbero Flamenco, Ex Sabicas (plans from The Big Red Book, Vol. 5 or from GAL Plan ). While not an exact copy (not a typical Spanish heel) I tried to stick to the design and look. It is strung up an a Woods: Spa...

That's a really nice looking mold Randy! I'll be very interested to see your rib fitting process and hope you'll be able to have some detailed pics.

John, check out this video of McLaughlin demonstrating his Shakhti guitar: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2j1wq_mclaughlin-shakti-guitar-demo_music#.UVazkBlm3fY The video is *VERY* poor quality, but he talks about the scalloping of the fingerboard so that you can create microtones depending on th...

Josh, I meant to ask in my previous post about the thickness of the staves you're bending. How does bending apple compare with other things you've done?

Re: Oud building video

Josh, this is really nice. The video is very well done and it is always nice to see the high quality work you do. I love the hanging 'stack' of sound hole cutouts.

Looks like you have a budding luthier there!
