Re: Dark spot in sap wood

I have some of that wood. No one has complained. A stain of some kind. Does not come out, but hey, it's wood. Wood has all kinds of anomalies. I built one spec guitar with it, and another on commission where he requested that wood and particularly liked the stain. IMG_1295 (Small).jpeg DSC00613_zpsa...

Re: black poly touch up

Glu Boost is the only CA I can use without going into an asthmatic funk for 3 or 4 days. For normal use, i.e., small repairs, gap fills, etc., I don't need a respirator. I have used it for pore filling, and for that I wear one due to the excessive amount of fumes. Also, the accelerator is pretty ben...

Re: Wagner Safety Planer

I'll look when I get to my shop tonight. I might have a set. I think I remember buying a replacement set some years ago when they were getting scarce. If I have them I'll be glad to sell them to you. I rarely use the safety planer, and doubt if I'll ever use up the blades on it before I die, or quit...

Re: Wagner Safety Planer

Have you asked the folks at StewMac if their blades will fit the Original? Theirs looks quite similar.

Re: black poly touch up

There is the black Glu Boost tint, and there is also a black gluBoost CA. Not sure off the top of my head if it's Fill n Finish or Thin.

Re: Tru-Oil & Perspiration

Wax does not dampen the sound. It's too thin to do much of anything except put in a tiny layer of protection. It makes a nice final finish that is a softer sheen than polished look. Also, when it dulls off, which it will in wear areas, you can hand buff it right back up. It's also quite easy to touc...

Re: Odorless mineral spirits as lubricant for French Polish

For what it's worth, Walnut Oil does not go rancid. The hard part is keeping it from drying, over a 30 year period.

Re: My latest - a cherry parlor

I love the stuff. I have been using it since it came out, and have had good results with it as well. It does take a little getting used to, but modifies well. I have even tried mixing 1/2 & 1/2 with acetone for the build coats. Dries in minutes for re-coating. I usually put on about 7 or 8 wet c...

Re: Wood storage, tonewood storage - ideas?

I use Howard Klepper's file sorter method. Backs and sides vertically, on long edge, between the wire separators. Each wire file sorter section holds a back and side set, if you are storing sets. Each sorter holds 11 sets. These are the ones I bought - https://ibuyofficesupply.com/fellowesr-wire-des...

Re: Venner supplies

There are several places that offer various veneer options. Veneersupplies.com is a good source and I have also bought a fair amount from http://www.constantines.com/flitch.aspx. Constantines has a pretty good selection, and lots of species to give variation in color with natural woods.

Re: Reverse Kerfing

This may be laziness on my part, but I just love the A-4 Kerfing that Ryan sells. It's laser cut, bends in every direction and looks great. The only weakness I've found with it is that it is somewhat brittle, so has to be handled with some care. I do stiffen in the lower bout against the top with an...

Re: Cutting rosettes by hand?

For what it's worth, here are a few pics of my tool. I made it when I built my first guitar, which I did with all hand tools, so I could learn how to use them. I did buy a 10" band saw because I failed miserably doing some things by hand. I already had a radial arm saw. I still use this tool fo...

Re: Wagner safety planer and Gilbert disk dust control?

I use the Gilbert Sanding disk for much of my thicknessing of sides, backs, purflings, nuts, saddles and almost anything else that needs thicknessing. What I do is to clamp a vacuum hose, which goes through a Dust Deputy, to the left back edge of the drill press table about 1" from the disk. It...

I believe the keyhole shaped dogs are for tying the binding or the back down with elastic or whatever one might use.

Re: Proulx side bender?

It was your video that made me realize I didn't need a bunch of stuff. Bent my first 13 with a pipe. Loved it. Then I had a piece of Brazilian that would not cooperate. Kept twisting. Flattened it out and got out the stuff I already had, and set it up. I'll never go back.

Thank you!

Re: Proulx side bender?

My less sophisticated version. 3 pieces of 2x4, one rounded to fit the waist, 6 quick grip clamps, stainless slats, blanket, mdf solid form, vise, router speed controller, gloves. Done in minutes, except for the baking & cooling part.

Tre-Wax works just great. I just used it on a Royal-Lac finished guitar that I bkuffed off with 0000 steel wool and then waxed. Makes for a nice soft gloss.

Re: light colored pencils

Quilters pencils from sewing stores or big hobby stores like Hobby Lobby or Michaels. The lead is soft, but it's silver, and easy to see on dark woods. They sharpen best with hand sharpeners vs crank ones.
