You can use a “tea” from quebracho extract, which is high in tannins and used in tanning.

Re: Another Gibson/Kasha encounter in less than a year?

Kasha was a biochemist and did not appear to have any training in acoustics. He subscribed to the theory that the bass side and treble side of the soundboard were considered separate treble and bass zones and that his odd bridge would match impedances to the respective sides.

Re: Ideas Wanted for Cross-Notching Aluminum Rod

I would take another piece of rod of the same diameter--perhaps an off cut from the one you want to notch, if you had to cut it to length--clamp them in a drill press vice, or perhaps in a 1 1/2 inch slot it a piece of lumber and drill your hole dead center between them, et voila' a half hole notch ...

Yes, the end result is that he restored a mediocre guitar to playability. It's even possible that his addition of a couple layers of veneer to that neck may have made it better, if it was anything like the neck on my C-1. It may even sound better than it did out of the factory.

Re: This got me mad!

Well, I have to agree, Max that adding rosewood veneer to the neck because he neglected to consider the thickness of the top is a bad move, but once he got that far into it he didn't have much of a choice but to make up for that mistake somehow. It would have been better, perhaps, to adjust the unde...

Re: Makeshift Alternative for Tone Woods?

Another possibility is redwood siding which is usually quartersawn, or you may be able to choose a quartersawn piece from redwood at your local box store. I used redwood for a Savart viola, and found it performed well.

Damn! That kid really did a number on that top. Sorry I can't offer any advice about repairing, but it's a shame you couldn't get him to pay for that. That's totally irresponsible behavior.

Pretty clever use of noodles and glue to fill in that hole in the soundboard. Why put the tuners on upside down though?

Re: Best way to remove "new construction" recessed light cans

Since the switch controls other lights it might not be desirable to put ceiling outlets in the cans. Since the fixtures have to accommodate ceiling materials of various thicknesses, the cans are adjustable in height within the bracket. If you remove some screws, you should be able to drop the cans t...

Re: Best way to remove "new construction" recessed light cans

Is there some kind of remote control switch that could replace the switch controlling the cans? If so, then that would be the easy way to control the can lights from "your" side of the wall. I think I may have seen something like this on "This Old House".

I don't have experience with your situation, but I would venture to say that if it seems stiff enough to you and has the tap tone you desire I'd think you could leave it unbraced regardless of its thickness.

Re: Shaping the sides of a Selmer/Maccaferri guitar

I pulled out the plans for the Selmer models and compared the longitudinal "arch" of the top in each. It is drawn as I thought: there is no real "arch", but instead, the side view of the top rises in a straight line from neck block to pliage, then falls from pliage to but in a st...

Re: Shaping the sides of a Selmer/Maccaferri guitar

Darren, I believe you have understood what I attempted to communicate re: the shaping of the sides. As far as the longitudinal arch, I haven't studied the petite bouche plans of late, nor compared them to the grande bouche. I've only made grande bouche guitars. If you draw a side view that accuratel...

Re: Shaping the sides of a Selmer/Maccaferri guitar

P.S. There is no contouring for the pliage. Although bent at the center of the top, the bend flattens at the edge to meet the straight sides. Francois Charle showed me a petite bouche when I was in Paris too long ago, and this feature was quite apparent. Apparently, Maccaferri wanted to make a true ...

Re: Shaping the sides of a Selmer/Maccaferri guitar

Shaping the sides is really easier than is explained in Collins' book. Essentially, the soundboard surface of the sides lies in a plane, i.e. there is no shaping, they're just straight--except for the cutaway area. Tracing along the side from butt to neck, the edge of the side is straight until you ...

Re: Growing my own osage orange forest

Thanks David. I think the hot dry summers may be more of a challenge to growing plants than the mild winters, but there may be some suitable Dalbergias and pawlonia is a great suggestion.
