Strings

Do heavier strings put more tension on a guitar and, if so, why? Also, if so, is it a significant amout between "light" gauge and "medium" gauge? What should I expect to observe as a result, if any?

Acoustic guitar pickup

I need advice on an inexpensive pickup to plug an acoustic guitar into a pa. Not sure what's best.

Re: Installing frets before gluing down the fretboard ?

I pressed frets in before gluing on my last one. I was very happy with it. Much more control. Gluing wasn't really any more difficult.

Re: Fretboard/top junction

I have had good luck by bracing the area above the soundhole "flat" with no radius to the top. I put all the other braces on first while the top is in a dish. The fretboard has lined up well at a good neck angle without causing a hump at the body connection. So far so good.

Re: String height at the twelfth fret 25.4 scale

Great feedback! Thanks, all. P.S. How short does the saddle get, on average? I have about 3/16" give or take, right now an the 6th is at 7/64". I want to get down to 6/64" if I can. That will reduce the saddle height (average) by 1/32". Should be ok? The top seems very responsive...

String height at the twelfth fret 25.4 scale

Is it just me or do Cumpiano's suggested heights at the twelfth seem crazy high? (i.e. 10.5 sixtyfourths on the 6th string?)
I'm putting on light strings and want to be WAY lower than that.

Wasburn EA10MB

I have a Wasburn acoustic that has a transducer under the saddle. The saddle is sticking up too high and causing the action to be too high by a mile. The saddle is also loose in the slot and leaning forward causing the intonation to be off. I took a look under the saddle and the transducer takes up ...

Re: Acoustic guitar finish

Well I have applied a brushing laquer instead of the Behlen's and I am wishing I was more patient and ordered up some Varnish. I couldn't find the Behlen's in the store so I used laquer because I didn't want to wait. Looks ok but having a very tough time getting a smooth coat on the top. The back an...

Brushing laquer

I am trying to put a nice "last" coat on my guitar project. I am using "brushing" laquer. For some reason on the top I can't get it to flow smoothly enough. The back and sides came out ok. I am worried about drips on the edges and at the soundhole so I can't get a smooth stroke w...

Re: Newbie neck question

I suggest reducing the tenon length to 1/4" and using a smaller block inside. It's really only there to prevent side to side and rotational movement. With bolts there seems to be no need to make a long tenon, I think. Also put the truss rod adjustment at the peg head end. Also brace the top &qu...

Re: Acoustic guitar finish

I usually seal with a thin coating of blonde shellac before using the Behlens I have put on 3 coats of shellac right out of the can, sanding in between. Trying to fill the grain a bit. Now I'm worried about putting truoil or Behlen's rockhard over it. I think I meant to follow John's advice and sea...

Re: Acoustic guitar finish

Thanks, Alan. Can a pore filler be used under it? Can it be used quite thin as a sealer and then filled in between?

Re: Neck angle new dreadnaught

I'm at 3/64" but I'm gonna go for .04" Couple more "swipes". I need to sharpen my chisel. Thanks, Mario. That's the exact answer I was looking for!

Hey wait a second! 3/64" is damn close to .04" (.046875") I guess you were refering to my first post. Got it!

Re: Neck angle new dreadnaught

I don't see how I can do that. There is no finish yet and I want to have the neck/fb installed before gluing on the bridge. I could do the assembly without gluing the fb extension, I guess.

Re: Neck angle new dreadnaught

Ok. i'm gonna try to get it a bit lower. Best thing to do is sand the body at the neck joint, I guess. Might have to sand the fb extension too. I will shoot for 3/64" I think.

Neck angle new dreadnaught

With the neck bolted on and clamped tight I have 3/32" above the bridge at the saddle location with a straightedge laying on the levelled frets. Good, right? Just want a thumbs up before moving on!
