Re: Finish for back of electric guitar-more
Michael Gurien's company in Seattle has experience doing this (laser burning) so we are going to do a test burn. Likely I will just glue some veneer on plywood first, good point. I will look into bar finish, don't know where to get it, but google is my friend. Need something tough like that which ca...

Re: Albert collins tele wiring question
I opened for Albert Collins in the summer of 1971 aboard a Washington State Ferry Boat, doesn't relate to the topic, but was a memorable gig.

Finish for back of electric guitar-more
I made a thru neck electric guitar with a maple thru neck and mahogany wings with a kauri top. My concern is the back of the guitar which has a maple center section and mahogany wings. My plan is to us Elm Burl veneer which I have, glue it on (very thin veneer) and then have a design laser etched in...

Making large volume knob
I am nearly finished building an aztec themed solid body electric guitar for my 11 yr old granddaughter. It will have one volume knob and I would love to make an oversized volume knob of the attached Aztec stone head. This will be done either by wood sculpting or casting. I have no experience and lo...

spraying color onto new neck
I am building a solid body guitar with a funky theme, meaning it does not have to be pristine. I have a neck which I assume has a poly finish on it and I want to change the color, right now it is clear finished maple, but wonder if I can just get a few cans of paint and paint it a different color? W...

Re: making an electric nylon string guitar
I am planning on using classical guitar tuners and a slotted peghead, In addition I will chambering the solid body. The paddle neck, I think I got it from stewmac, is not as wide as a std classical bridge, so that is why I am asking about options for a bridge, also I have no shop, but have exp makin...

making an electric nylon string guitar
My 10 yr old granddaughter has a keen interest in playing nylon string guitar. I want to build her a fender neck style solid body. I will be using a paddle head fender style neck I have what I am wondering is what to use for the bridge since the string spacing will be closer than on an acoustic nylo...

inlaying a pickguard
Gibson on their J-200 has an elaborate inlayed pickguard. I am interested in inlaying on a pickguard for electric guitars, I have noted that some custom pickguard places say std pickguard material is not good to inlay. So what material is good to inlay in a pickguard? then what material should the p...

white finish on flamed maple
I was told it couldn't be done, but I have seen it online.
I have seen a white finish on a flame top. Does anyone know how to do this?

Rain drums - drums played by the rain.
I would call them "rain drums", but the idea is that when it rains and it rains alot in the Seattle area, that the rain plays the drums. Obviosly I would use a commercial drum hardware and drum head, but wonder what you would use if you made a drum to be left outside all year round for the...

removing headstock fiberboard overlay
The headstock fiberboard overlay is warped and the logo is mostly worn off.
I can get a putty knife under part of it.
What is a good way to remove the overlay?
I am not interested in repairing it a I will be replacing it.

Custom made guitar parts?
I am curious what parts you have custom made or customized? I just had this tele ashtray done for the "Eagles and Horses" solid body electric guitar which is a tribute to Jn Denver. http://lazrart.com/guitar_plates.htm They posted it on the website and now is in the mail to me, so I have y...

Using Lathe for pickup winder
I am struck with fear again. I just bought a Harbor Freight variable speed mini lathe to use for making guitar pickups. I don't know how to make pickups and am looking for suggestions for converting the lathe. I do have two copies of Jason Lollars book ver 2 and 3 both signed by Jason. I obviously h...

Re: Tools for building a solidbody electric?
so to answer your question, none of the tools listed are needed to build electric guitars. I suggest that if you have friends with tools you might be able to get their help. I have a jointer from the 30's that I haven't used yet (just got it) Paid $25 for it without a motor and I have a motor for it...

Re: Tools for building a solidbody electric?
I built my first electric solid body in my lap for the most part. I hogged out the cavities with a drill motor and then cleaned it up with a chisel (it is also chambered) and has a 1/2" maple cap. I glued up the body by putting it on a scrap piece of plywood and nailed on some 2x4 scrap, then u...

Mistakes made while building early guitars
I encounter fear alot, but I know that through my mistakes, I learn. Often I have posted questions on the old forum without finding the answer I needed. Why? Because, I was afraid of making mistakes and wanting to short cut my education by benefitting from what you learned with your mistakes. We get...
