Re: Tru-Oil & Perspiration

Wow, 4-1/2 years later I’m searching the interwebs for information on OSMO Polyx and Renaissance Wax and I find my way back here. Long live the MIMF!

Re: water borne lacquer waiting time plus an interesting site

I've watched most of this video (about 30-some minutes left), and I really like it. It's good information that gives you a good sense of the time it takes to do a finish well, and presented quite humbly. I mean, he DROPS the guitar, and instead of starting the filming all over he tells us about it a...

Re: Sand-through with water borne lacquer

Regarding dry sanding the General High Performance: I found it sanded easily up to 400, then loaded the paper (boogers, corns, whatever you call em) quickly at 600+. This led to backing up grits and oversanding, which caused sand-throughs. I took it all off and started over. The second time, I level...

The Luthierist Podcast

Hello, MIMF friends! Many of you know that longtime MIMF member Paul Rhoney has been producing a podcast called The Luthierist over the past few years. Paul has interviewed some of the most well-respected luthiers from around the world, as well as up-and-coming guitar builders. Recently, I've begun ...

Oh, that sounds familiar. Maybe you gave that info in a discussion a while back. Thanks!

Great work, Jim! That top is beautiful.

BTW, I'm a big fan of Osage. How did you "cook" the fretboard?

Re: New build: The Alligatrix Stinger solid body electric

Hmm, so taller than a standard humbucker bobbin, huh? Isn't this what a Wide Range is, or a Travis Bean? I've seen a couple other folks follow this path, and I've wound a few tall P-90s, as well. I think throwing neos in the mix creates yet another tonal option. Super cool stuff!

Re: New build: The Alligatrix Stinger solid body electric

Back in the saddle, and cranking em out! Another great guitar, Markku!

Are you just using 42awg for those pickups? And they're steel slugs with the 1/8" thick neo buttons on the bottom? I've had good luck with the neo powered pickups I've made.

Re: L-00 from Grellier's plans

Looking good! That back and side wood is going to be beautiful under finish. Please give some closeups of your rosette and binding/perf scheme.

Back to your original post: why was it you shifted the soundhole and bracing? Will you do the same on the next, or follow the plans directly?

Re: Brite-Tone water base lacquer

Any updates on the use of Brite Tone? Looks like it is about the same price as the General High Performance and EnduroVar ($45-$50 per quart). I like the idea of more solids giving a quicker build with fewer coats. Anybody used both the General and CrystaLac products for a comparison?

Re: Finishing with Enduro-Var Water Based Urethane - Detailed Method

The problem with EnduroVar wet sanding using water is that it shows witness lines on buff-out. DAMHIKT. There might be enough differences with the High Performance finish that there aren't witness lines, but StewMac recommends wet sanding in their instructions for waterbased finishes. http://www.st...

Re: Protecting the "holes" during wet-sanding

The aforementioned friend... Get a can of paste finishing wax, there's a few brands that make it, Minwax and Trewax for example. Just fill the holes with that stuff after finishing, and it blocks the water from going in. When you're done, you can leave it in and it lubricates screws. Or in larger ho...

Benchtop Drill Press Recommendations

Hi, folks. I'm doing some tool upgrades and I need some recommendations for a good benchtop drill press. I have a 17" pedestal Jet, and it's great, but I can do with a smaller unit. As for requirements, I do most of the usual electric guitar builder things on the drill press: accurate holes, ho...

Re: New build: The Saltire Bass

I have a bass build finishing up with some interesting blade style pickups using neos. Another two guitars have neos on the slug side of some hybrid humbuckers. I'm liking the sound of the neos under the hood.

What is it with you bassists and your gratuitous use of knobs?!

This is looking good. Your accuracy of cuts/holes is excellent. BTW, what pickups are you using, and what will all those knobs eventually do?
