Re: I built a 21 string Kora

I can't play it but i do have an idea how to from just watching you tube tutorials. But that's nothing new for me i can't play any of the instruments i made. That includes native American flutes, guqin, ukulele, herdy gurdy, and cigar box guitars.

I built a 21 string Kora

I built a kora and took lots of pictures along the way it really isn't that hard a project for anyone with a basic shop. I turned the bowl and the cross members but this can be made with a large bowl and dowels. The bowl and bridge are Cherry and the rest is African Mahogany. Interesting fact about ...

Re: bridge placement & compensation

Alain i did a quick research of your past posts and found you answered all my questions about this in one post. Filling the frets today and soon will be making the bridge i hope to be finished this week. Thanks to all. If not too late, her is how I do it. I glue my bridge after finishing. My tenor h...

Thanks, but is that measurement to the center of the bone saddle or to the edge of the saddle? (Edge meaning the edge facing the nut).

bridge placement & compensation

I'm building an electric low G tenor ukulele using nylon strings and bone nut and bridge. The string length is 17 inches. My question is do i place the bridge edge ( that is the edge facing the nut) at exactly 17 inches from the nut edge making the free vibrating length 17 inches? From what i read c...

Re: How do you finish the finger board?

Thank you Peter & Barry, i originally googled finishing a fret board and found mostly people applying a wipe on finish. After Peters reply a looked up scrape frets clean and everything opened up for me from using a penny or nail head to using a fret guard. I found something that will work for me...

How do you finish the finger board?

I'm building a ukulele and it is my first build with frets. Usually i will spray a finish on when everything is finished and tape off the parts i don't want finish on but frets can not be taped off. So what is the most common method around this? I'm not their yet but trying to plan ahead and get it ...

Oud neck block

I see a lot of info for making the neck block by either cutting with a saw and then chiseling or band sawing etc but nothing about using a lathe. If the half profile of the bowl is the same as the backbone profile then at any point along the length (end block to end block) it is a section of a circl...

Re: An Oud Arbi I built (with construction progress pictures)

Looks very nice Jo i also am planning on building an Oud soon. In the picture of the finished bowl, face down on a flat surface covered with yellow sandpaper is to make the edges perfectly flat to attach the sound board on, correct? Do you then scribe a hollow on the side ribs where the bridge will ...

Re: Oud or lute question

Yes now i see the difference between the 2. I like the looks of the oud more than the lute which has a wider neck and a lot more strings but besides that they look very similar in fact on Jo Dusepo site he has a lute with 5 course of strings like an oud but i still like the looks of the oud better. ...

Oud or lute question

The body of the Oud is sanded smooth/round on the outside of the instrument. I looked at as many pictures of oud's as possible and in some pictures it appears that the individual staves were left flat. It's hard to tell for sure in pictures so i ask is this an accepted practice? If someone knows of ...

Re: My finished hurdy gurdy

My finished hurdy gurdy

Here are some pics of the finished unit. I used free plans from the internet but changed most everything to make it my own. I looked at a lot of you tube stuff and professional builders to try and get an idea of how to build this. I wasn't aware of this site until after i built it so i had to study ...

Re: Hurdy Gurdy

I watched a lot of HG players on you tube and he is the one i like the best. He seams to have a deeper sounding HG that i like better than what i have which is C-G tuning. Does anybody know what his is tuned too and can a HG built to C-G tuning be set up to a lower tone like his? Is it just tuning i...
