Barry Daniels wrote: Fri Oct 02, 2020 12:56 pm That is great. Good job. I noticed that the photos of the guitar at the beginning of the discussion have disappeared. No before and after comparison.
I reposted them later. They’re on the 2nd page of the thread.

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

Well I guess I'll call this one done! The owner, my son-in-law, had to make an unexpected trip here from Colorado so he took it back with him. I didn't have the pickguard or pickup installed yet but he has done that since returning home. I think he likes it! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50389...

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

Got it this far! I still have a lot of set up work to do plus the pickguard and electronics. I've been on vacation for the last 10 days but it's getting close! I don't know why the pictures are sideways? I kind of lost the brown burst, it's still there if you squint. :) https://live.staticflickr.com...

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

I bet you all thought I gave up! I let this sit for a couple months while we remodeled the bathroom. I thought I would get back to this when that was done but there was an executive decision to continue on to the last room to be redone, I'm not the executive. But now the house is completely done! I ...

Re: New shop lights?

LEDs for sure. When I built my shop they were still kind of expensive and I'm cheap so I have two rows of the cheap porcelain keyless lamp holders with CFLs. I have 3 cheap T8 two bulb shop lights that hang over the table saw and two of the work benches. I thought as these begin to fail I'll replace...

Iv'e been working my money making job from home going on 5 weeks now. But the bright side is I seem to have more time in the shop since the commute doesn't take much time at all. :)

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

I'm waiting for new dremel bits to get here so I can refresh/re-cut the binding channels. I've been thinking about a jig that mounts to my grinder to remove fret tangs over the neck binding. Any ideas? Progress has been slow due to other home improvement projects that need to get done. Plus there ar...

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

I haven't posted for a while since there hasn''t been a lot of progress. I did find a local jeweler who repaired the cracked tail piece He said it was plated brass and took a lot more heat than he thought it would but it should hold. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49754120308_c48733596a_z.jpg 9...

Re: Steam generation

Here's mine. It's an old tea kettle I got from the Restore for 50 cents, some auto heater hoses, a couple reducing fittings and a ball valve needle. I use my camp stove for the heat source. It's kind of clunky but it works. Actually the curved radiator hose lets me set it over the back of the wind g...

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

Thanks for all the replys. I’ll try to solder the tailpiece. If it doesn’t work I’ll just get a replacement, I don’t have the original trapeze parts anyway. A three sided patch would be easier to fit but my concern is holding it altogether until the patch is glued in. I’ll have to think about that f...

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

I did get to talk with the owner for a while during Christmas. Full disclosure, he's my son-in-law who lives in Colorado and I'm in Illinois. So this is a not a job for profit but more of a challenge, but of course I still want to do a good job. We talked about finishes that might cover all the repa...

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

Now another issue has popped up. I want to reuse this part of the Frequensator but see there's about a 3/4" long crack in it. Would a good silver solder hold? I've done some welding and brazing but have not used solder other than for wiring. I see some of the silver solders claim a tensile stre...

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

Made a template that matched the arch so I could use my router and pattern bit to take out the majority of the top I want to replace. I didn't want to remove the bracing so I just shaved the top off of the bracing. Now I have some hand work to do making the ramps and fitting the patch. https://live....

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

I added a hardwood dowel to fill that back in and reshaped the dovetail. It fits decent now but still needs a little more work.

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

Just a quick update. I have it all apart and I see why they put a wood screw in the heel. Part of the dovetail was missing were it would be under the most pressure. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49290346132_f7c54175a7.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49353355188_6d5f8f70ce_z.jpg https:/...

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

So I finally got a little time to work on this. It's going to a long process since I only have a couple hours a week at the most to work on it. I took a closer look and noticed there was an oak dowel rod in the heel. It was what I was afraid it might be, somebody put a big wood screw in the heel. I ...

Re: Can this live again? 1941 Epiphone Triumph

I don't understand the need to repair fretboard divots. For the most part they're harmless and only illustrate that the guitar was played. It takes a lot of playin to make these and usually only guitars that play well get them. If I'm handed a 25yr+ guitar with pristine frets, chances are that its ...

Re: Thicknessing back and sides with a jointer

Rodger, the OP was asking about using a JOINTER rather than a PLANER. I am just pointing this out in case someone else reads this thread in the distant future and gets the two confused. Using a jointer, you can't really stand back waiting for it to explode, you will be right over it with your hands...

Re: Thicknessing back and sides with a jointer

I've done it a few times. I used good double stick tape and stuck it to another board otherwise I couldn't get as thin as I wanted in my planer. I will say I always stood off to the side when running it through the machine expecting it to blow up at any time. Never did though. It actually "seem...
