Re: CAD modeling archtop guitars

Dean, check out Two Cherries instruments youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoCherriesIns He uses Fusion 360, but you still might find some information useful. I am struggling with Fusion right now myself trying to build a Les Paul. The CAM is driving me nuts. A lot of people use Fusion sim...

Re: CNC for inlay work

CNC's are perfect for inlay. I'm trying to use mine to do as much as possible as I struggle to learn Fusion 360, but inlay can be accomplished with Vcarve, a much simpler program. I did some corian inlays of sycamore leaves on a uke fretboard that turned out pretty well. I'll try to find some photos...

Re: Carbon fibre rods and truss rod adjustability

I was still planning on having the adjustment at the headstock end but I am using the TR with the small Allen key nut so it requires a smaller cavity than the Gibson style adjuster nuts. I'm hoping between constructing the neck with a scarf joint and that smaller TR excavation at the headstock my LP...

Re: Carbon fibre rods and truss rod adjustability

Thanks Marshall. My 10mm estimation was a bit exaggerated! I modeled it up in Fusion 360 and spaced the channels for the CF rods 6mm from the center TR channel, which is about 1/4". I see what you mean about spacing them too far apart and running into them when carving the neck. That would suck...

Carbon fibre rods and truss rod adjustability

Hey everybody, long time, no post. I'm building three Les Paul style guitars and I'm working on the necks now. I bought the StewMac double action truss rod and carbon fibre reinforcement rods. The CF rods are 5x6mm rectangle and 455mm long. My plan was to put one on each side of the truss rod about ...

New board heading?

I confess that I succumbed to the lure of social media and got sucked into the tar pit that is Faceboob. I belong to a couple of luthier groups on there and have steered many toward the good old MIMF when they have asked questions that I know have been answered (more expertly usually) here and can b...

Re: MIMF retrospective and future

Wow, I'm really late on this, but I feel compelled to chime in. I consider the MIMF my "alma mater" in the sense that it is the only luthiery school I have ever been able to afford. I found it back in 2002 via a Yahoo search or maybe even the long-gone "alltheweb.com". Even thoug...

Re: Happy 20th Anniversary!!!

I guess I'm late to the party, but that applies to most things in my life. Anyway, I found you guys in 2002 after doing some "Yahooing" in the pre-Google days. As others have said, I can't begin to describe the amount I have learned here. There are other luthiery forums out there, and of c...

Hmmm. I'll have to remember that place. Looks like a good source for material for building your own CNC.

Re: Bracing suggestions for experimental lute guitar

Another early lute-like instrument strung and tuned similar to the guitar is the Mandora. Unfortunately "mandora" is used as a name for several instruments that have little to do with one another. We need Latin taxonomically assigned names for musical instruments like we do for trees so yo...

Re: Hot hide glue for binding repair

I'm not an expert on this material, but I think if it were me, I would order some more of the same binding and experiment with gluing it using different glues before I touch the instrument, just to be safe.

Re: Bracing suggestions for experimental lute guitar

There is a historical instrument called a "Colascione" that is similar to what you have going. See the bottom of this page for pictures and some descriptive information: http://www.lutesandguitars.co.uk/htm/cat08.htm You could contact Stephen Barber and Sandi Harris and ask them about the ...

Re: Walnut back and sides question

"Early" guitars, as in Renaissance and Baroque guitars, and vihuelas often have multi-piece backs so it is not without precedence. I also like building things from trees I have known ; )

Eric, you're right about this being a fantastic resource. I discovered MIMF around 2002 when I first began to seriously contemplate building instruments. I came at it with nothing. No luthery schools in my area or my budget for that matter. I have to say I have learned more here than anywhere else i...

Re: Converting an existing guitar to just or pure intonation

Paul Beier, a lutenist, and apparently a software developer, wrote a string and fret calculator that can calculate fret positions for several temperaments. Google "Beier String and Fret Calculator" and you'll find a few places where you can download it for free. I have used it in the past ...
