Re: Acoustic guitar Finishing advice
Thank for all the help everyone! I've got 7 coats on now, and am already pretty happy with how it looks, so I think I'll just apply a couple more (I'll probably stop at around 10 coats). It's already quite glossy - I don't think I really want it much glossier than it already is - so I think I will a...

Re: Acoustic guitar Finishing advice
Hi Barry, I've applied another 2 coats today, and you were right, the cedar is looking much better. Thank you! A couple other questions: What's a rough number of coats you typically like to apply? And, when I'm done with the finishing, is there a certain amount of time I should wait before stringing...

Re: Acoustic guitar Finishing advice
Hi all, I was away from the guitar for a bit, but just got back into it, and applied my first coat of tru oil tonight. I had prepped all my wood by sanding to 220, and using pore filler on my mahogany neck. To apply the tru oil, I had a rag bunched up into a tight pad (I think it's called a mouse?),...

Re: Acoustic guitar Finishing advice
Thanks everybody for all the advice! As Barry said, my neck is mahogany, and so needs to have grain filled somehow. Now, when I've looked around, I've found a number of people who seem to think that tru oil does a decent job of filling grain itself, and they don't seem to use a separate grain filler...

Re: Acoustic guitar Finishing advice
Thanks guys, both of those posts help clear things up a lot! I've been looking around, and Tru-Oil looks like a really good option, I think that's what I'll go for! I've looked around at how people apply it, and just have a couple questions I was still confused about. Firstly, to what grit should I ...

Re: Acoustic guitar Finishing advice
Hi Barry, thanks for the help! Tru-oil hadn't been on my radar, I just looked it up, and it seems promising. One question about it - Someone I know had, a while back, given me the advice that whatever finish I decide on, I should stay away from any oil, because he said it it kind of "clogs"...

Acoustic guitar Finishing advice
Hello everyone! I am new to guitar building, am just nearing the end of my first build (a steel string acoustic), and am trying to decide how to finish it. I've done a fair bit of research, but have found many things quite confusing, and so am hoping for some guidance. I should preface that I am loo...

Re: Advice Needed - When should I install frets onto my neck?
Ok, I think I can take out of this that it doesn't matter too much what I do first, so I should be ok to go ahead and fret, and then shape the neck afterwards.
Thanks for all of your advice everybody - it was very helpful!

Re: Advice Needed - When should I install frets onto my neck?
I do it like Andy, frets before shaping. It’s easier. I do put the unshaped neck on the guitar and level the fretboard before I take it off and install the frets. That was actually another thing I was wondering about -I tried to be as careful as I could to sand perfectly evenly when I radiused the ...

Advice Needed - When should I install frets onto my neck?
Hello everybody, I'm new to guitar building (and this forum!), and am just getting near the end of building my first guitar (a steel string), but want some advice on finishing the neck. Currently I have all the head stock work done, and the fingerboard is glued on and radiused. My question is what s...
