Re: laminated necks

I like to use flat sawn maple (cheap bugger) and laminate a dark veneer as an accent on my neck through guitars. I bury the body section in a quasi hollow body ala Danelectro. I angle both the headstock and the neck to body point.

Re: Again: DIY headless tuning machines

cool thanks, Dave. Looks like McMaster-Carr has rod as well.
I never knew that those tuners had a name either. I alway knew them as "those tuner-things on English (and Portuguese) type guitars.

Re: gradient/progressive reading glasses

Check out www.eyebobs.com they have lots of good looking solutions - some with a closeup section, a computer section and normal section. Their frames are better looking than the dreck you get on the carousel at CVS.

Re: question about knobs

Bill- I can't believe I said that about no release on the second half. Not doing that has caught me several times. You don't need release on the plastic part, but you do need it on the silicone to silicone part. The vacuum chamber is used with the slower setting alumilite. There is no way you can mi...

Re: tilt-a-whirl positioning fixture

Bob - I can see it is a real rabbit hole once you go bowling ball size, with all the hydraulics involved.

As to the eye-bolt - most weld up the return on the eye end. - I liked the idea of having multiple holder types that fit into the eye-bolt part. One with a plate, a threaded end, a clamp, etc.

Re: tilt-a-whirl positioning fixture

I love vaccum clamping, but you have to use a reservoir system pump, that constant running pump will drive you mental. I am making one of these to clamp/bolt on my stewmac stand. http://www.jerryhartzell.com/wood-carving-on-a-budget/jerrys-wood-carving-vise/ I have seen other made from 2" trail...

Saz?

I have the need to build a saz. Acoustic or electric, no matter. Does anyone have any construction tips. I have run thru all the youtube examples.
Is there any neck reinforcement? Scale info. Anyone?

I have been using SharkFX and various forms of ViaCAD for years now. It uses the same ACIS modeler than Solidworks employs. SharkLT is $699, it is the same as the FX version, but lacks the rendering package. http://www.punchcad.com - check them out.

Re: Jason's vacuum thermoforming adventures

I used to have an 18" x 18" vacuum forming machine, it used an electric element much like your stove. Plastic sheet was suspended above the part mold. The heater element swung back after the plastic had reached the proper melt temp. You would judge this by watching the plastic– first it wo...

Re: Question about Laminate Neck wood

Here are 12 neck thru guitars (+ 2 basses) all made with big box maple and a dark veneer center stripes. I laminated 3 of the 3.5" wide boards and yin-yanged my templates to get 2 neck thru blanks from each laminated block. The headstock ears are glued on out of scrap bits. Rough carve 14 head/...
