Re: Tool Consensus

I'd buy that from you for $60... If there ever was a tool in my wish list it would be that! Plus at that price even if it was used sparingly it's affordable enough to keep.

+1 for Alaska Specialty Woods. Even their lower grades, which are very reasonably priced, are very nice.

Re: Whats your favorite fingerboard radius for building electric guitar necks?

If you plan on using a Floyd Rose locking nut, the nut radius is 10", so you might want to take that into consideration. A good all around radius already mentioned is 12". I usually don't like flatter radii for electrics, because I find it more uncomfortable to pick, though depending on yo...

Re: Customers in your shop

It's happened to me when I had my cabinet shop... It's happened when I had my home improvement business and customers constantly loved to watch me work; though in the field it's harder to work secluded. And it never fails; something always seems to go awry when people have their eyes leaned on you. ...

Re: truss rod channel

I try to get the trussrod to fit just right. Too tight and you may risk wood cracking when it moves. Too loose and it may rattle when you play certain notes. I mainly use dual-action trussrods that are flush with the neck wood when I install the fretboard; they're made to work that way. A Fender sty...

Re: Joining Birdseye Maple Plates.

If your plane can do it, you might ty adjusting the frog to decrease the size of the mouth and see if that helps... Also it may help to have the plane at a bias or skewed relative to the joint, though that would not allow use of a shooting board....

Pretty cool! How about friction pegs, you probably can mock something up with a smaller dowel for the shafts and cut a larger one for knobs. You can call them "fiction" pegs....

Re: Fretboard Shaping

I usually inlay first, then shape the fretboard radius. I do make sure my inlays are of sufficient thickness to handle this. If not it may be best to do as Mark mentions.

Re: 3 axis router build

I can replace the rail with anodized pieces in the future to. this cost about half as much. I would strongly recommend against using anodized aluminum. The pressure of the hardened steel of the bearing casings against the anodized surface will cause it (the surface coating) to crack, leaving basica...

Re: 3 axis router build

That's great! I ran a machine with skate bearings for a couple years, as long as the pressure's pretty evenly distributed you're fine. Plus they're cheaply replaced. Then again, you may be surprised how much force a machine can generate. I originally used electrical conduit for my machine, and I act...

Re: neck backbow

I do necks different ways... bu when I do an acoustic neck, I do what Chad recommends, which is induce a bow on the fretboard with blocks and a clamp. I learned that from a recommendation by Mario Proulx. On an electric guitar with a Fender-stye neck, I actually slot and fret the fretboard AFTER glu...

Re: Cumpiano's Hardware Based Neck Joint VS Tapered Dovetail Joint

I did a tilting adjustable neck that worked with cams, so that getting the string height lower decreased the scale length slightly, and increasing the string height pushed the neck sightly away, to compensate for the increased action. While it did require a little retuning, the intonation was very g...

Re: Flush trim router bit with table or no?

I'd agree with Barry that without knowing your usage, it's hard to determine what would be the "best" way. For templates, I prefer to have the bit table mounted, so that I can easily register the pilot on the bit with the template without much fuss; also you won't have to worry about the r...

Re: 'scarf' jointing of center seam of plates?

It doesn't seem like the most difficult thing to do and make it somewhat strong. You could cut the rabbet in one piece and then the tails, then use said piece to mark matching pockets in the other piece... Maybe time-consuming, but you would in essense be "inlaying" one side to the other.....
