Re: Inspection Camera

This is an old thread Allyson, but since you gave it a poke, I thought I would pitch in my 2 cents on the topic. I did a bit of looking into bore/ inspection scopes last year and Depstech kept coming up up with good recommendations. What I came to realize pretty quickly though, is that almost all of...

... and John, nice bit of craftsmanship on that old Stromberg (Kay). The tonal improvements should be quite noticeable when your done. I should read more and more carefully. I didn't look at the name of the poster that did all of the well done work patching and re-bracing. Just skimming the reading,...

Re: 1920s 'The Veron' Stromberg Voisintte - Bridge Blues

I use a caul backed on one side with 1/4" cork, sanded smooth. This will force the veneer into any lower uneven spots. 16. Clamping caul with cork.jpg Glued in shim with some minor but fussy leveling yet to do. 17. Glued shim.jpg The last images show the bridge being installed. Again, the Infra...

Re: 1920s 'The Veron' Stromberg Voisintte - Bridge Blues

I have the footprint leveled but ended up with about a .020" deep footprint. That's not much and you could just go ahead and set the bridge down in there but I decided on adding a shim. 11. Leveled foot print.jpg There was some minor chip out in the bridge plate. I filled it with West System Ep...

Re: 1920s 'The Veron' Stromberg Voisintte - Bridge Blues

Gluing in the Spruce fills. 6. Hot hide in Spruce fills.jpg I need to plug the pin holes. Since I am leaving the bridge plate, I am making the plugs out of Maple. I use a plug cutter, with the grain at a right angle to the plug. Most of the plug gets drilled out with the new pin holes are drilled. I...

Re: 1920s 'The Veron' Stromberg Voisintte - Bridge Blues

I don't think that looks bad enough to cut out a big hole and then patch it back in from the inside, if the interior is not all torn up as well. I have a 57 D18 in for a bridge replacement, it's as bad, maybe worse. The interior is fine though and so is the existing bridge plate. 1. Bridge off.jpg S...

Catalyzed Acrylic Urethane's resistance to solvents

The title is pretty much my question. Does anyone have direct experience with Catalyzed Acrylic Urethane's resistance to hotter solvents, such as Acetone or lacquer thinners, if wiped onto a finished surface as a cleaner? Any problems with clear or flattened finishes?

Well done Jeff, the design and finish really does capture the vintage "vibe" as Bryan puts it, of a Red 56 Bel Air. Nice bit of work!

Re: polishing discs silicone scare

I ended up ordering some Silicon impregnated Silicone discs from riogrande.com. I got impatient and didn't wait for your source. I bought both a pack of Pink and a pack of Black ones. Rio Grande does not indicate the grit, they use the terms; course, medium, fine, extra fine, ect. I think the Pink o...

Re: polishing discs silicone scare

Sourcing these wheels is not the problem, jewelry supply houses have them. Finding silicon impregnated silicone wheels that work well for fret work on the other hand... I am interested to find out which specific wheels have worked well for others that use this method of fret polishing.

Re: polishing discs silicone scare

After leveling, I crown with a 300 grit diamond coated, concave crowning file. I follow that with a sanding stick, the spring loaded plastic variety, that has concave grooves filed into both sides. I use a 600 belt with it. Next I switch to the flex shaft Dremmel with a the first wheel. Not sure of ...

Re: polishing discs silicone scare

Ryan, would you mind sharing the exact type of disc(s) you got and your source? I have been polishing my frets for quite a while this way but do not like the current Stewmac offerings. When I first got on board with fret polishing this way, Stewmac sold a Dark Grey or Black wheel, which was used fir...

Re: Metal resonator "Body only" or damaged for parts instrument for sale

Stewart MacDonald used to have an article in Trade Secrets, Al Rorick's do it yourself resophonic guitar, a 20's wood bodied, Triolian inspired design. It is no longer posted in the Trade Secrets at Stew Mac but I Googled and found links. An alternative to a metal bodied build. There are 3 parts. ht...

Re: Metal resonator "Body only" or damaged for parts instrument for sale

You could try your own hand at building from scratch. Some good information in the library in the guitar page 2 section, resonator instruments. This one is rather comprehensive already and there is more if you go look.

Re: Saving a headstock that suffered multiple failures

Thought about this after I posted that, to answer your question better, I should have mentioned that I did consider an overlay on the back of the head stock. The carbon fiber splint repair and head plate overlay is strong enough without doing the back. It didn't need it and didn't have one originall...

Any reason you didn't put a veneer on the back of the headstock?
Yes, did this project close to give away for a friend feeling a financial pinch from the pandemic. Had enough time invested already!

Thanks all for the replies.

Really bugged

I took this mandolin in for repairs and... er... um, a good cleaning. Never had anything like this cross my bench before, the little Black dots and streaks are bug excrement. The mandolin had been hanging on a wall unused for some time and was brought to me to make ready to sell. Structurally, in pr...
