Re: Question about Laminate Neck wood

I have made three necks with wood from Menard's (a home center) and have a couple of others made with wood from a local woodworkes shop. They have all held up fine so far and the necks age from 12 to 2 years in age and they are all about the same more or less in terms of stability. I regularly play ...

Re: Source for pre-slotted bass fingerboard

John, I am not sure I follow - you do unbound fingerboards with the "nibs"? Could you elaborate a bit? Is more of the process or the finished product? I am interested in seeing an example.

Thanks, your comments are always insightful.

Re: Neck Through Blank

The StewMac and the Carvin Necks appear to be the exact same neck. I would not be surprised if they were just being sold by the different retailers but coming from the same manufacturer. Same materials, scale length, radius, truss rod cover, etc. The big difference is that the Carvin neck is current...

I will echo what everybody has already said here and offer my compliments on a really fantastic instrument. Following the build process has been a treat and educational as well. Outstanding!

Re: A 5-String Multiscale ‘Headless’ DIY Bass

Excellent work on this. Along with everybody else I am following this build closely. One question regarding your cavity cover: Are you planning one having a recess in the body so that one can use their thumb or finger to lift the cover off once in place? With such a tight fit, it seems like it would...

Re: First Build - Tulipcaster

I see that you have already cut your neck profile out so this is a little late, but you will find it much easier to route the truss rod channel on a blank of wood that has parallel sides and cut the profile out afterward. It would also be easier to thickness the wood if you have some extra bits on w...

Re: Latest Build - A Jimmy Page Inspired Telecaster

[quoteSet neck, no truss rod access at the headstock. Where, then? In the neck pickup route?][/quote] You are correct. The access is at the neck heel - the pickguard must be removed to access it. My necks are pretty chunky so once the truss rod is set, I find that I have a pretty stable neck once th...

Best source for fender style bass machines

I have recently been contacted by an old friend who would like me to build him a 5 string bass, and I was doing research on parts and have what I hope is a simple question for the bass builders on the forum. The bass is to have a headstock layout similar to a Music Man Stingray - 4 tuners on top, on...

Re: Latest Build - A Jimmy Page Inspired Telecaster

Art, Thanks for the compliment. The original had some kind of reflective material attached to the rear of the pickguard. Hard to say what it was, but it looks a lot like crumpled aluminum to me. I used metal tape, which is am quite sure is aluminum, that you can get a the hardware store for connecti...

Latest Build - A Jimmy Page Inspired Telecaster

My latest built, a telecaster inspired by Jimmy Page's "dragon" tele from his early days with Led Zeppelin. I have working on it off an on for about two years, and I finally declared it done earlier this week. While not a true recreation of the fabled instrument, I endeavored to keep the p...

I really like the inlay approach to this type of build. A new twist on an old idea. I look forward to seeing the final result.

Re: Finishing before or after fretting

Tim, Rosewood fingerboards are typically left bare. It is not uncommon to put some lemon oil, or other oil on the board from time to time to keep it from gettig too dried out, but rosewood boards are generally unfinished. As far as the rest of the instrument, what kind of poly are you planning on us...
