Re: 17/16 Hammered Dulcimer Build

I accidentally deleted one of the videos. I reposted it. It just a little practice thing but shows how the lower notes sound.

Re: 17/16 Hammered Dulcimer Build

Great job! How does it sound? Thanks. I just started learning to play the thing. I made a video of Oh Susanna and a practice exercise. I uploaded them to the same photo album. They are at the very end. You can tell me how it sounds :) Here is the link again... https://photos.google.com/share/AF1Qip...

Re: 17/16 Hammered Dulcimer Build

I finished the dulcimer and built a stand this weekend. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I starting learning to play it this weekend. The photos are updated to show the finished dulcimer.

17/16 Hammered Dulcimer Build

I'm currently building my first hammered dulcimer. I'm using the plans from Music Makers (harpkit.com). The back is Baltic birch ply, the rails are walnut, the pin blocks are hard maple and the braces and bridges are also hard maple. Actually, I haven't made the bridges yet. I put a walnut veneer on...

Re: Hammered dulcimer soundboard question

Thank you for fantastic explanation! What you said about plywood makes sense. I got my hands on some quarter sawn European spruce. I had to resaw it, glue it up and thickness it. As soon as I figure out how, I'll post some photos.

Re: Hammered dulcimer soundboard question

Thanks Charlie. I can glue up and thickness the soundboard in my shop. My big problem with doing my own is getting quarter sawn soundboard wood locally. If i order it, it's going to be expensive. My only source in town only has flat sawn lumber, except for oak. I guess i could get a 6x6 cedar or red...

Hammered dulcimer soundboard question

I'm fairly new at building music instruments. I'm currently building my third acoustic guitar and I'm building a hammered dulcimer. For the dulcimer, I'm using the 17/16 plans from harpkit.com. It seems a lot of folks think baltic birch ply would make a decent soundboard. Harpkit.com says plywood is...
