Re: Ukulele (or guitar) Scarf Joints
I enjoy hand tools, and the neck scarf joint is one of the most fun jobs - especially on a uke which only takes a minute or two

Steve I had my eye on that Veritas shooting board mechanism thingy. Looks interesting. Did you make the bench?. It looks very well done. I used the same Veritas twin screw vice but I mounted it on the end, fullwidth on my 28" bench. I use it for windsor chair seats, and for guitars First shot i...

Re: Coolest or most useful tool that you have?
The box has hinges, I'd be interested to inspect how they were fabricated, of what, and how they are fastened to the box. That thing belongs in a museum! Chuck Great idea on the chunk of steel - works like the Allen Carruth scraper from S-M - my daughter uses one in her repair shop and they are grea...

You've heard of a sharpening stone? I came up with a sharpening rock. It has 1817 carved in the lid, and the recesses were all done with an auger to depth.

Paul If you use the can with the soda straw and the built-in trigger, you can;t stop and re-start, you have to use it all once you start. The next level is a small gun that screws to a slightly different can of the same stuff that allow you to squirt it when you want. If this interests you, contact ...

Re: Handcrafted Luthier Tools
Not strictly a lutherie tool, but these low-angle spokeshaves are really great. A friend made me a little one in Lignum Vitae, and I have made others in maple, boxwood, purpleheart and jatoba with both flat and curved bottoms. Perfect for neck and heel shaping. Some have a brass wear piece from the ...

I wrote about Paul Hostetter above on the 15th and just learned that he passed away on the 13th. May he rest in peace and may his great website be a part of his legacy.

Freeman Yea I refer to a bunch of general sites too - love Frank Ford's, One of the best but little known is Paul Hostetter's. http://www.lutherie.net/ He has been in the repair business since the 60's and is a friend of all those guys. He interviewed Nick Lucas twice before he died and is a top not...

Re: Helpful websites
Jigs are different than techniques. Besides, sometimes a jig takes the fun out of it. And in cases like this, there is barely a time savings

On another thread, someone posted a website he refers to whenever he makes a neck scarf joint. Just like him, I build instruments at a leisurely pace - works out to one every 10 months or so. So I end up taking a lot of pictures so I can look at what I did last time, and I also have a few websites t...

The first time I clicked it showed him making the drill, second time the circle cutter - would make a great rosette, you're right.

trimming binding
Saw a video on the current Gibson acoustic assembly line. The guy binding the heads had a commercial heat gun running pointed up in a holder. He waved the long binding piece over the heat gun, pressed it into its position on the head until it cooled, then used this file jig to adjust the joint at ei...

Re: Like a foam, or a plaster, or a... imaginary magic space filler... thing.
I know I am a couple months late, but be careful of the "great stuff" type single part foams. They are moisture cure, and if you fill up a space bigger than a softball or so the center may never harden - a real mess when you are trying to shape it. Spray the foam in an inch or two thick, w...
