Re: Ukulele (or guitar) Scarf Joints

I had a similar jig for cutting scarf joints on my table saw, but I usually prefer to cut them by hand with a dozuki saw these days. This enables me to adjust the desired angle for the various instruments I built and their different types of headstocks.

Re: A Morin Khuur

I found these plans online but altered them slightly for my build. These and some measurements I found online of various instruments were my basis.

Re: Oud neck block

If you have a lathe, sure, you could make a cone shape and cut it in half. I always carve mine by hand.

Have you ever seen anything like this?

Have you ever seen anything like this? This is an Iranian Tanbur but the same process could be applied to any bowlbacked (or even flatbacked) instrument in the same way. There's an extra half or slightly less of a body over the soundboard. It seems to reflect the sound in an interesting way. https:/...

Some ouds I built and experiments with body shapes

Here's one of my 'Damascus' model ouds, based on the work of the Nahat family: https://i.imgur.com/WblnU07.jpg Here are two of iterations of my 'Shahed' model ouds, inspired by Iranian designs and designed by me using frequency analysis to emphasise and bring out certain notes when playing: https://...

Re: My latest build: a renaissance guitar

Have you tried PegHeds? They're geared, but they look and work just like regular friction pegs except for being easier to tune. They make a ukulele size that should work well for that. They're a bit expensive, but worth it IMO. Yes, I've tried them before (a customer wanted them for a lute I was bu...

Re: A child's size oud

Very Nice! I had an old oud that had a non-wood rose (early plastic? glue coated parchment?) added to the back side of the soundboard rather than an integral one. Were you going to do that with this one? I left this one with open soundholes, because I prefer that sound and it's designed for a child...

I wonder how they keep the wood from drying out and cracking? I'm also curious what they used for the skin head?
I don't know about the first issue, but I read somewhere that the traditional material for the skin is lamb's bladder!
