Re: Soldering Iron/Station Recommendation
640F/340C is certainly on the low side.. most pro irons go to 850-900F, but are adjustable.... That Ryobi thing is probably adjustable, but reasonable exact temp's seems difficult... FOr soldering elctronics, too low wattage and temp is not good, as it leads to long heating times, which transfers mo...

Re: Soldering iron temperature for guitar, amp and effects circuits
I think Hakko is OK, as far as I know. I've been using various Wellers for over 40 yrs, and have at least 4 versions, so personally I stick with those. Weller also has some controlled stations which are more directed towards the hobby market, and should probably cost around 100-150 USD, as opposed t...

Re: Soldering iron temperature for guitar, amp and effects circuits
I use 350-370C for most things.. slightly lower setting for ICs and small transistors, and small components... for larger parts, connectors etc 370-400. A 40W iron is kind of smallish for larger stuff. When you have temp control, buy the larger iron you feel you can afford. I use 80W Wellers, both a...

Re: Piezo Bass Preamp
Piezos in general want high impedance loads, and most piezo mic's solve this problem by using a FET transistor as an impedance converter. This might be one solution to the load problem. Another way is to use opamps in non-inverting mode, where you will benefit from the JFET or other high-Z input opa...

Re: Just for the fun of it - DIY tube amp
Of course it depends on the transformers, - and several other parameters, but the numbers I referred to are a sort of average for several HiFi-amps, and to some extent moderately driven guitar amps.... things can always be pushed, but not without a cost..

I'm currently working on a 2x6L6 that's supposed to deliver aorund a 100, but I'm holding it back a bit and going for a...

The movement is lengthwise.. I have no experience with banjos - is there a way to tell if the "drum skin" is not tight enough , or how does one determine enough tension? ( - I was thinking about just fixing the bridge with a small strip of double sided tape... )

Banjo saddle moving
A friend of mine has a 6-str banjo where the saddle seems to be moving, constantly throwing the thing out of tune... is it common at all to glue the saddle to the resonator top, or is there another solution??

Weller TCP tips only fits TCP irons... TCP irons are controlled by a Curie magnet at the back of the tip, - regular controlled irons have a sensor that sits against the rear end of the tip..
BTW - I was assuming you have an old TCP iron - there are other tips to get with other temperatures..

Re: Where is silver solder used, good ,bad?
I think there is ome confusion here.... silver solder for brazing and silver solder for electronics is not the same thing. For electronics the use of silver as additive is mainly based on the newer specs for ROHS and lead free soldering. There is also this strange notion in HiFi circles that silver ...
