Re: Guitar Number 3

Looks great, Eric. I like the nice large radius on the binding. Should be comfortable to hold.

Re: Lasercut fret slot sawing jig

It would be relatively easy to make a tapered pin in a lathe or even a hand drill by holding a file against the tip of an oversized pin.

Re: Lasercut fret slot sawing jig

LMII templates included a small tapered steel pin which eliminates all the slop.

Allyson, you are certainly welcome to post in any thread but I just wanted to make sure that you are aware that some of these threads are years old. For example, this one hasn’t been active for seven years.

Re: carbon reinforced neck: trussrod yes or no

No truss rod would definitely be a negative impact on marketability. Also, be aware that if the edges of the carbon fiber layers are exposed on the outside surface of the neck, you will have difficulty in getting a smooth surface because the carbon fiber is so much harder than the adjacent wood laye...

That was done with a bottle of blue die that I had acquired back in the 1980’s. I couldn’t believe that it was still good.

Re: Cutting carbon fiber rods

Not really. A Dremel abrasive cutoff wheel can be used for cutting across the bar when shortening it, but I would NEVER try to cut it lengthwise. Just buy the size bar you need.

Looks like the capacitor is just in a different side of the potentiometer so there should be no difference. But I’m no electrical genius so someone else may give you better information.

Re: Neck dovetail with a rounded body

Determine the angle between the top and the sides (won’t be 90 degrees) and cut the neck heel to match.

Re: fretting 0 radius fingerboard.

Yes, you should have a bit of curvature in the fret wire because this minimizes the fret ends from springing up. And to press the frets you should have a caul that matches the fretboard (ie; flat).

Wetting the surface of flame maple with water can help to avoid chipping when cutting with a bladed tool.

Re: Silvertone parlor back loose.

For the extreme edges of the break there is not much you can do. They are so tight that if you insert anything the break will probably travel further. So floss where you can and leave the rest. When you go to gluing the joint you can squeeze some glue into the edges by applying a bead of glue over t...

Re: Silvertone parlor back loose.

It looks pretty crunchy to me so using water and/or vinegar will turn it gummy which is not useful in my experience. I would inset coarse sandpaper into the joint then press the joint closed and pull the sandpaper out (aka: flossing the joint). Periodically, turn the sandpaper over to floss the othe...

Re: Building instruments, while having young kids

Unbelievable! I don’t know the laws in your state but in my home state of Oklahoma, if your fence or anything else has been encroaching on the neighbors property, and has been there for over seven year then there is no issue and it must be left alone.

Re: Dulcimer sides

I made a jig for my spindle sander that consists of two MDF fences attached with a hinge at one end. The other end has a large bolt through the non-moving fence that serves as a lead advance screw to slowly move the other fence closer to the sanding drum. It is surprising how well this works. I can ...

If you used Original Titebond you can wipe the dried glue away with a rag dampened with warm water. Take it slow and keep wiping. It may take several minutes depending on how thick the glue is.
