Re: Single Coil mounting holes, I need a fix

You can get weldable threaded fastners, such as: http://www.grainger.com/category/weld-nuts/nuts/fasteners/ecatalog/N-8lv that can be spot welded over where the holes for the bolts on the pickup are. I use these frequently on light weight steel, along with a spot welder I bought at Harbor Freight, T...

Re: Denser neck wood than body wood

Quite a few 50's and 60's Harmony Guitars, and almost all 50's and 60's Danelectro guitars used poplar for the guitar necks. I have a 1958 Silvertone (made by Harmony) and a 1957 Danelectro U2 that have poplar necks that continue to work fine. Its very light wood.

Re: Tulip Poplar?

Danelectro made thousands of guitar necks out of Tulip Poplar (and most remain straight 70 years later). They did put in 2 steel braces (running under the fretboard) in each one to help keep straight (no adjustable truss rod).

Its very easy to work wood, but dents easily.

Of course, there is the Yamaha bamboo guitar - where the top is made of hundreds of strips.

Re: To truss rod or not to truss rod

The Original Danelectro guitars used 2 steel bars, like you described. They used Poplar for the necks. 50+ years later, few of these necks ever had any problems with warping. You can buy carbon fiber with about the same dimensions - it works well too.

Re: About to make an 8 string Laminated Bamboo neck w/fanned frets or Firewood...

Where did you find your source of bamboo? I was considering using 1/8 inch veneer that I could bend the end pieces (12 degrees) for the headstock, and then stack to get the 3/4 to 1 inch thickness. The veneer is available in 4 foot by 8 foot sheets, but its not really stocked anywhere locally - most...

Re: Hello to all question about double neck electrics

I have built a number of 6 string / bass double neck guitars - all have been neck heavy, but I have always used lightweight body woods (poplar is good for this, but it dents easily) to keep the guitar as light as possible. When I made my last one, it was the guitar I played 90% of the time (for a 5 ...
