I like driving too Kathy, driving up from southern Colorado, with a short stop in Eugene to see my daughter. See you all in few days.

Re: GAL Convention

Count me in. Very much looking forward to it and meeting some of the MIMF members. I will be displaying a few instruments and will be looking for as much feedback as possible. I last went to a GAL convention in 1990 just after starting to build guitars, its been up and down since then but I'm in dee...

The back wood really caught my eye as well. I've never built with primavera, what is it like?

Denver area guitar show

Its actually called the Douglas County Guitar Show and Luthiers Expo. Will be held June 28th just south of Denver. I'm not formally involved but will be showing a few instruments. I was there last year, pretty small then, but looks to be a bigger event this year. http://i62745.wix.com/2014-guitar-sh...

Re: Neck Joint --- Dovetail or Spanish Heel??

My heels look just like Trevor's except I use furniture barrel bolts rather than the threaded inserts shown in the pic for the heel. I embed a simple nut in the fret board extension tenon before gluing on the fret board

Re: Producing purfling - ideas?

I put a fence on my oscillating spindle sander and slowly adjust the fence to get the thickness I need. No problem going down to .o6 inches.

Re: Is my Engelmann Spruce ready?

Thanks for the feedback guys. I was out of town over the weekend (babysitting the grand kids) With no time for the internet.
I might try the baking idea, haven't decided yet. If I get the "little beads" perhaps not dry enough. Also, how long do you recommend baking a top set?

Is my Engelmann Spruce ready?

In April of 2012 I was able to harvest some Engelmann Spruce. It was immediately split into wedges and de-barked. Starting a month (and up to 5 months) later it was re-split and squared up into billets 1 to 3 inches thick. Those billets have been in my shop since then, usually 30 - 45% humidity leve...

Re: dyed red veneer

I have purchased veneer from B & B Rare woods in Golden, Colorado. They have a wide selection of veneers in natural wood and dyed veneers. I bye veneer sheets and cut my own purfling strips. I'm currently working on a guitar using red purfling lines for the rosette and top, side and back purflin...

Re: Report: Seminar at Healdsburg Guitar Festival

Thanks for the report. I'm envious as I was scheduled to go to Healdsburg this year (been wanting to go for years) but issues at home prevented the trip.
More reports would be appreciated.

Re: fretboard/bridge woods

I've used Mexican Royal Ebony also know as Katakox (Is that the same as Texas ebony mentioned above?), its dark purple/brown with some subtle figure and I've used Cocobolo.

Target EM2000wvx Finish?

Anyone out there have experience with this finish supplied by Stewmac? Particularly, any comparison with LMII's KTM water-based finish, which I have used successfully. I am planning to stick with a brushable water-based finish. Thanks for any opinions.

Re: Seeking Finishing Sevices

Agree with Michael with the exception of his comment on water based finishes. There are good non-toxic finishes you can use, shellac (french polish), True oil, and the water based "lacquers". I have been using LMIIs KTM-9, brushing it on, and have been satisfied with the results. One luthi...

Re: purfling ledge

I also cut my own purfling strips from veneer, but don't use any special jig. I clamp a straight edge rule over the veneer and cut off narrow strips with an exacto knife. It takes a few passes but makes nice strips, as wide or narrow as you want. I'm in the 6 -10 guitars a year club now so spending ...

Re: Adhesion issues with cocobolo

Can't say I've had a lot of experience with cocobolo but on a recent guitar I used cocobolo for fret board, binding and bridge. I always glue the fret board with epoxy - no problems on this guitar and I use LMII instrument glue for bindings and bridge and also no problems with adhesion. I wipe with ...

Re: Waterbased Laquer? - Poly? - Acrylic???

I've been satisfied with KTM-9 and it is still listed on the LMII site. When I displayed my guitars last year another builder thought it was Nitrocellulose. If the KTM-9 is truly discontinued I try the KTM-SV next.
