I'm getting the impression that it might not matter which one I use. I have more of the tighter grained cedar and I'll start there when I get to the batch. I have one piece of the wider grain that's only big enough for a ukulele and I might start making those at some point.

Re: Which of these cedars would you use?
Thanks! I got enough of these boards to make 9 instruments. I have so much wood for tops now I don't think I'll ever use it up. After the two I'm working on now, which are Sitka, the next three are redwood or Douglas-Fir.Carl Dickinson wrote: ↑Sun Jan 14, 2024 4:00 pm Use both. Two instruments at a time. I usually do more than one.

Which of these cedars would you use?
Hello, I recently was given some cedar siding boards. They are very straight grained and quarter-sawn. As you can seen in this photo, one has very tight grain and the other is much wider. They both ring very nicely when tapped. Surfaced they are 6" in width, good enough for a 3-piece guitar or ...

That's a good idea, I'll do that when I need more.Barry Daniels wrote: ↑Tue Jan 09, 2024 9:49 am I bought a bunch of 1/4” Baltic Birch plywood and built the clamps up in layers so I wouldn’t have to cut the mortises. It worked out well.

Re: Best cam clamp wood
I've built cam clamps out of maple, cherry, walnut, birch, and baltic birch plywood. The only ones that split had something wrong with the design, not the wood. And I think I only had one or two split.

Re: Progress on Guitar #3
Eric, I'm curious as to how much downweight you have on the router jig. I can't tell if you have the cable on a crank or a counterweight. I bought a jig that looks to be pretty good (patterned after the Stew Mac design, more or less) but as it is, the entire weight of the router (Bosch Colt) would ...

Re: Can this neck be saved?
Here's what I've come up with. I used a modified tool to gouge a narrow channel where the maple veneer should be. I will get some black epoxy or CA glue and fill the channel. This guitar is still a learning instrument so making a new neck is not necessary. Here's what the channel looks like now. nec...

Can this neck be saved?
Another rookie mistake. When I was gluing this laminated neck together I put a piece of maple veneer in the middle. It appears to have slipped when clamping and now that I'm shaping the neck it is not big enough to appear. The neck is almost to the final thickness in the photo and all you can see is...

Re: Paper for label?
Thanks, everyone. I was overthinking and was wondering if some fancy system was needed. My third guitar is still just a learning experience and adding a label is one of the new things I'm doing. I don't know when I'll make one that feels like I've graduated.

Paper for label?
Hi, all.
What kind of paper do you use for your labels that are glued to the inside of the back on an acoustic guitar? And what kind of glue?
Thanks,
-Eric

Re: First Headstock Logo
Looks pretty good. One way to clean up the edges of the inlay after sawing it out is to use a set of needle files. Also, practice removing less wood and getting a tighter fit. What did you color your glue with? I got new set of diamond needle files but didn't spend enough time with them. That's fir...

First Headstock Logo
Hello, Here's my first attempt at making a headstock logo/emblem/badge, or whatever they're called. The wood is ebony, the inlay is Tagua nut, one of my favorite materials. ejk - 1.jpeg If you use magnification and good lighting you can see all the flaws. Well done. Thank you! You guitar looks beautiful in spite of non matching back and sides. Just for the record, the back and sides came from the same walnut board. They match very well in person. I resawed the parts myself and wanted to try doing laminated sides. The outer layer is that walnut. The ...

Progress on Guitar #3
Finally! I had a really hard time with the binding on guitar 3. I used gramils and did the binding channels by hand for guitars 1 and 2 but ran into some serious roadblocks on #3. It was a tale of two steps forward and three steps backward many times. I think this issue was this guitar has pretty th...
