Re: Advice on cutting neck blanks, please

Your explanation makes perfect sense to me. Before I go a step further, I will restate for the umpteenth time that I am no expert. I have read lively arguments by people who insist that flat sawn necks will work as well as quarter sawn necks. Of course, the quarter sawn neck school replies that thei...

Re: Any experience with the Guild George Barnes Acousti-lectric

Brian, it seems to me your hopes for the brace bar are pretty optimistic. I can see where the bar would take up a lot of potential load that is trying to pull the tail block to the neck block. But, down pressure from strings over the bridge? No way. Not unless it's a lattice sort of brace supporting...

Re: Any experience with the Guild George Barnes Acousti-lectric

Brian, maybe I've missed something, but you have me VERY confused. If I understood you correctly, you said that a longitudinal brace which carried the pickups would free the top from any string tension. Huh? Did I misunderstand you? Such a brace could carry the weight of the pickups, but as long as ...

Re: surface area of bridge contact with guitar top

I have pondered this question long and hard in the past and I assure you I am NO expert. Alan always offers good advice and information. Before I had ever read any of Alan's postings, I read about D'Aquisto, who seemed to favor more massive, heavy bridge feet. I also read and watched Benedetto, who ...

Congratulations on a nice looking guitar. Please show it to us again when it's all polished up, neck mounted, appointments installed, strung up, etc. I think red guitars are cool!

Re: function of F-holes in top vibration

Many of their functions have already been mentioned. In addition to those functions, sound holes allow the instrument to breath. By this, I mean they allow air to enter and exit the sound box as the top and back flex and vibrate. Air moving in and out plays a role in coupling the top and back vibrat...

Re: maybe a not-so-whimsical humidity indicator.

Nothing too whimsical, if you ask me. I have used a similar device for more than 20 years now. Sure.....it's not ultra precise. However, it gives me a VERY good indication of the relative humidity in my shop. You know....relative to last night or last month or whatever. I don't expect it to be pure-...

Re: Something a Little Different

Kerry, I have said here many times that nothing does it for me like an arch top and I love your arch top! It is way cool! I'll tell you that I agree with Brian Evans about the bridge, but that would be an easy switch-out any time you wanted to do it. The bridge, per se, does nothing to diminish my a...

Actually, Barry, I don't believe it was low profile at all, but, sure, it is narrower than an "in-the-top" sort of humbucker.

Re: Seeking a wood bridge base template or ideas?

Screws go right into the wood bridge foot (at least on all that I have ever seen). No metal sleeve. Added stability against a forward lean might be achieved with a wider bridge foot. Some feel a wider foot inhibits the vibration of the top. Others feel a wider foot is an advantage. Experimentation w...

Hey, Brian, I'm sorry I didn't click back in here and see your thread sooner than I did. I like your guitar, too. I definitely understand long layoffs from projects. I've done the same thing with one guitar modification and a scratch built table. LOOOOOOONG layoffs! The main thing about your guitar ...
