Re: Electric Guitar Bridges - Which is best?

I prefer the tuneomatic and stopbar. I like the way it feels under my palm, and I like the look. And to paraphrase what someone said earlier, every design has it's pros and cons. Pick the one you're most comfortable with. I also like the Fender type hardtail. Just depends what fits with the design I...

Re: My latest build completed!

Thanks, Jason. To answer your questions: No, I've not built a standard acoustic, but I'm planning one soon. As to the bracing scheme, my plan at first was a standard X brace, but I wanted to join the neck at the 16th fret like an electric. When I did this, I couldn't make the standard X bracing fit....

Re: My latest build completed!

Thanks to all who've replied so far! Hans, the top plate is .118". If I build again I'll actually go a little thinner. I don't think I'd have any problems there. As to more build progress pics, I've got the entire build posted on a couple of different forums, but as far as I'm aware the board r...

Re: My latest build completed!

Warren, thanks a lot. Gordon, thanks also. But this is my 5th build, not my first. Although IMO the first and the 5th aren't that far apart. Got a lot left to learn. Just getting started in this, IMO. I appreciate everyone's interest and comments.

Re: My latest build completed!

Thanks, Mark! As to the top, I couldn't see any reason why, if I used an acoustic top, the pickup wouldn't pick it up and give me a decent acoustic sound. From what I've read doing research for this, the top is one of the major components in producing an acoustic guitar's sound. So I thought if I wa...

Re: My latest build completed!

Some specs. The top is Sitka, body is White Ash. Flamed maple neck and Rosewood board. 24.562" Gibson scale. Corian nut, bone saddle. The body shape is an L-00, but I wanted to join the neck at the 16th fret, like a lot of electrics, so that I had easy access to the higher frets. This changed t...

My latest build completed!

Hi! This is what I'm calling my Faux Acoustic. Basically, I was looking to get an amplified acoustic sound from an electric guitar sized instrument. I think it worked pretty well. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-qLAo7Kdx_hk/UJ63KkTVumI/AAAAAAAACDU/CsXDQXv47TY/s640/100_1127.JPG https://lh3.googleu...

Re: perception of tone

Mine always said, "You'd better change that tone, young man, before I do it for you!" That always worked, because I knew the tone she'd bring out would not be a good one. To the OP, MHO is, new strings/setup, especially if you adjusted/changed pickup height while cleaning them or during se...

Re: Mario Labonte's Explorer guitar

Beautiful job!
Regarding the pickups, those two(Seymour Duncan sells them in a boxed set called the "Hot-rodded Humbucker" set)are my absolute favorite pairing for an electric guitar. Really hard to beat, IMHO. Congrats! Nice git!

Re: A few random Questions

Just my experience, FWIW. 1. I'm assuming you mean 2'X8', not 2"x8". General rule of thumb for drying wood is a year for each inch of thickness. A two inch thick board would take 2 years. But you didn't mention where you purchased. I get mine from a lumber place locally. All their lumber i...

Re: Mistakes made while building early guitars

The biggest mistake I made on my first guitar was not drawing it out full size, and working from that. I built it by "the seat of my pants", so to speak. Just saw it in my head and built it. The guitar came out playing and sounding great, but there were a lot of things about the way it was...
