Re: First post… questions
This should work if the sides were presented from a template. This is how I am doing my current build.

Re: Progress on Guitar #3
Well done. You guitar looks beautiful in spite of non matching back and sides. That's good info. As for the binding tower, I'm hoping to purchase one but I may build one also. Looks like it worked well for you. Seems like installing perfect binding is the one thing that separates the beginner like m...

I think having the ability to look through the stack of boards is probably an important step.

Chris is absolutely spot on. Silicone and silicon easily confused.

Those look pretty good Barry. I have the Weller station but if it ever craps out, I'll go with one of these for sure.

Re: Soldering Iron/Station Recommendation
Unless you're soldering ICs it really doesn't matter. The hotter the better but remember to turn it off when you're done.
Soldering tips are consumable so check the price of replacement tips before making the purchase and maybe get some to have on hand.

It looks nice but would be at the bottom of the list for expenses for me.

Re: Bending woes, trying to improve
And I'm stuck in the snare. I want it I want I want it. But, Wood may last longer than celluloid but I don't expect to live long enough to see it degrade. When it does, it's someone else's problem. I know, that's a bad attitude but it's mine :-) Since I can't or won't spend the money on the hazmat f...

Re: Bending woes, trying to improve
Plastic and celluloid are the easiest and give better protection. Wood can look better sometimes but really doesn't offer the same protection from bumps. I don't buy celluloid anymore because of the hazmat fee so I'm stuck with wood or plastics that I don't like. Oh for the good old days of buying g...

Beautiful! Love the quote as well.
Are the strings kind of loose or do you use special heavy strings?

I love that we as luthiers have this kind of material at our disposal for use as tools as well as instruments. It's a beautiful tool and I want it even if I don't use it!

Re: Fretboard over top
But, once you start seaming the dovetail free, the fretboard will start releasing, I think.
After re-reading Frank Fords post http://www.frets.com/FretsPages/Luthier ... etest.html, I see where it will release with heat and pressure. I now think, HHG for everything.

Fretboard over top
I've been thinking about this on and off since I just did a reset and getting close to finishing my own guitar. The dovetail is the one place I would like to use HHG but it requires moisture to release it. It's easy to induce steam into the dovetail but not so much under the fretboard. Heat alone wo...

It's a beautiful piece of work Bryan. I'm not sure I understand the mechanics of though. I'm guessing you brazed the threaded rod to the tuner? Where's the center pin? I made this and I can't imagine a better tool for the job.

Re: Idiot proof approach to guitar building? For this idiot
Allen, your method will not work for me. I've never been a note taker and lean towards repeating mistakes and getting it done... 2 or 3 times. At 67, it's too late to change. In the end I think I'm building a fine first guitar and I like the tone of my $20 Marketplace Stagg so the bar isn't very hig...

Re: First Build Progressing, Slowly
Eric I love those homemade Gramils. I have the violin perfling cutter and it sucks for doing binding ledges. What you have looks like it might work better. Before building a router jig, I think I'd like to give these a try, I love hand tools and I haven't got a perfect ledge yet using power.
